How to make a Marineland Bio-Wheel Filter quiet

So over the last few days we upgraded the tank in my sons room to a 20 gallon high.

I put my extra Marineland Penguin 350B on it, but it was too loud.

I ended up taking out the bio-wheels and replacing them with large strips of filter foam.

Not only does this remove the tricking sound from the wheels, it diffuses the current nicely so our Betta has a nice slow current.

Now the filter is so quiet it aggravates me that I lived with it in my living room for so long, being so loud.

I suppose it is a little less effective now, but I stuffed it with extra filter floss.

I did something simalar with my 330, I got it used, and the clips that hold the bio wheels in place where missing, since they don't make that filter anymore, I could not find the parts. I'm not sure about the 350, but I know they make baskets that if inside the 330 and can be filled with the bioballs that are made for canister filters. Although I have heard many people complain about the noise, I cuurentlly have 2 -350's , a 150, a 100 all runnning in my bedroom and I don't notice a noise from the bio wheel, only the waterfall sounds that all my HOBs make.

yes, the waterfall sound is what I was referring to.

during the day I find it tI be nice, but always hated it when trying to watch TV at night.

then it was keeping my son awake at night, so thus the change. I didn't know they made baskets for these units though, that is pretty cool.

This is a great idea! I made a , but this sounds like a good alternative. My fish used to avoid the giant current from the waterfall and all the plants were laying almost sideways before I did this. Now everyone's happy!

I'm glad I found this, as it's always good to have a plan B.

the best part of the marinland is the bio wheel that's really the only reason to buy one. I find they have a very strong flow for bettas. if ur using a old one it will still work fine but id recommend the aqua clear filters. I use aqua clear or sponge filter on all my betta tanks. the aqua clear is adjustable and not very loud. on my 350 I just put some plastic mesh I use for a tank divider in front where the water comes out.
