I hear they are liked by pleco's but I'm never able to put a piece in the tank because it just floats to the top.

Stick a fork or spoon in it to weigh it down, or you could get a screwcumber from ebay or amazon

Or you can use bamboo skewers to hold it down (put the skewer into the gravel to hold it down)

Or get a vegie clip which suction cups to the side of the tank

You can use a veggie clip, it has a suction cup so it can hold to the side

I use bamboo skewers. My tank is short enough so I can keep it secure with the glass top.

Yes that is a good idea. I bury the clip in the gravel so that the cucumber sticks out.

How long can I keep the piece if cucumber in there before it rots. And how many times a week should I put a piece in?

I leave mine in 24 hours or so & then put a new piece in every other day

About 24 hrs sounds right. I once left a piece ZucchinI in there for two days and it disintegrated and fell apart into a zillion pieces - made quite the mess! Lesson learned.

Sorry to jump in and ask more questions, I was looking to add cucumber to my tank for the first time today.

Do I peel and boil it before putting it in? Is it ok in a tank of neon terra, guppys and a dwarf gourami? And I assume the cucumber will be in place of feeding the fish flakes for that 24 hour period?

Thanks

I don't peel the Cucumber or ZucchinI I give the fish, but I do wash it with soap and rinse well (before cutting it) if it is going into the fish tank.

I doubt that your Gourami or neons will eat it. Cukes and Zucch pieces are mostly given for Algea eaters, like Plecos, or Otos. My BN and Otos love this stuff, but it took a few tries of adding a piece to the tank before they figured out it was food. I use the stick-it-on-a-fork method to weigh the vegetable pieces down.

well I slice it length ways about 4" long into a small bowl with with a finely chopped clove of garlic( meant to boost immune system etc) then zap it with a drop of water in the microwave for a min or two till the cucumbers soft let it cool down. the fish seem to love the garlic and come the morning cucumbers all gone

What I do for my BN scar is blanch the cucumber with garlic and once I have blanched it for approx 5 minutes or till its gone really soft I grab a fork and stab the cucumber piece until it no longer floats as the seeds tend too as I have noticed hold small pockets if air which cause it too float

But how do you get pesticides and other chemicals out of them?

yes there will be plenty left over. my 7 year old pleco loves them. If you are concerned about the nutritional value you can also look into steaming them with a broiling pan. all the nutrients stay in it that way!

Bouling removes any form of pesticides but I grow all my own cucumbers so they are pesticide free great for my babies

yep I get my vegis from walmart who advertises pesticide free. Theyll be okay. the only annoying thing about vegis are they have to be big enough for them to find and see but normally they eat about 1/10th of what I sink. Then you have to take the vegI out 12 hours later! luckily I buy them by the bulk and theyre around 50 cents a piece. plus I add an algae wafer in there for them also. plus the love driftwood in between meals. I also have been noticing that my blood parrots and other small mbuna cichlids have been picking at the vegis lately
