How To Find A Female For My Male

Hi,

I have an amazing male German blue ram. So far I have presented him with 4-8 females in total. All have died. He wasn't harassing them or anything I think they were just weak strains.

I have an older female ram who is larger and she just batters him.

I've since moved him into a community tank with several rams including the abusive female.

I'm thinking now to take all my rams except him to lfs, how can I encourage pairing if I buy another female?

Should I try just 1 or several again?

How long are you leaving them with the male? Also when you do have a female with him do they show any interest in one another?

I left them until it seemed they bonded, but some just died.

There was one who was swimming around with him all the time and I was sure they had paired so I took all the others out.

Within a week she was dead.

It might be worth mentioning I have been buying these rams from what americans would call a big box store. I can see why it is not recommended. But it is £5 per fish rather than £11. I am apprehensive to spend the higher amount at a more fish-based shop in case I get the same issue for more cost!

My prize male is from a box store but might have been an exception.

Ah I see, so the problem isn't so much them not pairing but rather the female not actually living long enough to spawn... I'd suggest trying to find a better quality fish somewhere and trying again. Feeding them blood worms and keeping the tank nice and warm (30-32°) should help encourage some spawning. With mine it's taken quite a few weeks in the past, sometimes a little over a month. It happens eventually

I had a pair that spawned within a couple of days before, and then a week later and a week after that. They ate the eggs every time then the male died

It was the super aggressive female that killed off that male and another after.

Yeah I've also had it before where they spawn in just days of being introduced. Though it is weird that they spawned in such quick succession... mines usually within 3-4 weeks of the previous spawn. Maybe it has something to do with the aggressive female, but what I have found is that sometimes the male or female will die after breeding, though I think it may be due to the stress of defending the eggs
