Hey everyone I currently have a 30 gallon tank that I’ve a breeder in with fry guppies. I got a 10 gallon tank yesterday for the fry. The tank is now running. I’m wondering what is the best way to cycle the tank quickly. And how soon can I get the fry into the 10 gallon. Thanks

The quickest way to cycle the ten is to take filter media from the filter on your thirty and add it to the filter on the ten.

I've never kept fry so I can't answer that question, sorry.

I agree with Kyleena696

You should take some water from the 30 gallon tank along with filter media from the 30 gallon and rinse it in the water. Then add the water to the new 10 gallon tank. I would say that 24hrs should be good enough, but if you have an API Freshwater Master Test Kit then you should test the parameters of the 10 gallon to see where it’s at.

I agree with Kyleena, you want to move part of the filter media from your established tank to the fry tank's filter, at the same time as you move the fry. That should give you an "instant cycle" on your fry tank.

Ok thanks everyone

Ok so if I understand correctly...I can take the filter cartridge and clean it out in a pale of water then add that water to the new tank. Sorry still learning this new way

Dose Prime and Stability daily for 7 days, or until there's zero ammonia/nitirite and a nice nitrate response; side of the Prime and/or Stability bottles have directions.

The water from the established tank does nothing. Beneficial bacteria live in the filter media not in the water column. Hence why it is important to move some of the media into the filter of the new tank. If you do that you should have an instantly cycled tank and can add fry right away.

What you should do is that if you have a filter that isn’t working right now use that to run your 10 gallon tank. Pull some media from your 30 gallon and put it into the new tank. That should give you the instant cycle that you need.

However...if you don’t have enough media, i.e. that media is the only media you have in your 30 gallon you won’t be able to do the instant since you don’t have enough to start a new tank.

Can you describe the filter media in your established tank? Is it just a filter cartridge? Anything else? Any sponges ? Bags of biomedia? I'm just trying to think about how you could move part of your established filter media to your new filter.

What kind of filter do you have? If its a 3 stage you could always take out a stage and replace it with a fresh one.. and put the used one in the new tank. Insta cycled.
Because you only took 1 stage it shouldnt hurt your cycle.

or to be safe.. take out your mechanical filtration(the sponge).. cut it in half, use half in the new tank with half a new sponge, then half the new sponge put in the 30 gallon.

The filter media is what's inside the filter that beneficial bacteria grow on. Filter cartridge, sponge/ foam, biomedia (ceramic balls, little pieces).

How do I know if I’ve a 3 stage filter
