How To Cut This Driftwood?

Kameron

Hey fish community! I was curious on if anyone can help me with how I could go about cutting this piece of driftwood. I’m thinking in half right down the middle but not sure what I can use to cut it with or if anyone has ideas on how to cut it or in how many pieces. Or if anyone thinks I should just leave it the way it is. I’ll leave a pic of it in my tank. My tank is a 36 gallon bow front

I can move it to the right a little bit. Yea it is touching just barely. I really like it but it’s so huge lol. I’ll have to try to rescape it

I cut my driftwood immediately after removing it from the tank. IMO though you should leave the tank how it is. I think that it looks gorgeous

Personally I would leave it the way it is. It is a really nice looking branch and would look even better with more plants attached to it.

Well thanks fellow fish peeps! I guess I’ll keep it the way it is. Just move it over some and find a couple plants to attach to it. Thanks everyone!

This piece was gigantic when we picked it out from our lfs. My brother and I had the same delima on how to trim it down but while it sat in the cycling tank to soak and sink we eventually just left it where it sat and it turned out really nice. My method for my last 2 tank builds was just kind of throwing stuff in there haha

That’s a good lookin tank! Maybe I just need to get some more moss on it and get rid of some of the brown algae still on it

I have to agree with what almost everyone is saying, the tank does already look really nice!

Attaching some moss or anubias petite or something to the branches would make it even nicer in my opinion

I forgot about anubias petite. I could get some of that and some more moss. I have a small piece of java moss covered in some brown algae at the moment right now. You can see it towards the left side. Little patch

Thanks! My lfs has some really nice little cups of moss, that's maybe 4 or 5 little cups just glued to the branches using Flourish Glue. Some java ferns there on the left and an anubias in the back (one of the taller types).

Yea I need to find some more moss. I never used glue. Mine is attached by fishing line. The java ferns look good and green!

I used string at first but the glue made it 10x easier. Just a bead on the bottom of the plant and stick it on, hold for 20 seconds and done. The moss was the same way, just spread it out and wrap it around the wood with glue inside. It makes it look naturally attached. Java ferns have always done well for me so they are a solid "go to". 3 out of my 5 tanks have them and 2 of the tanks have java ferns budding new plants/roots.

I may have to get me some glue to try it out then. Thanks!

I think it's a really amazing piece of wood. If you truly want to cut it then with a super serrated knife or saw. Once finished, I would sand down any sharp edges. I just got a small piece of driftwood and used a nail file to smooth out anything sticking out. Worked like a charm!

Any floor plan for the plants or ideas on what kind you want to use?

Some type of moss for sure and Anubias Nana petite for sure. Not sure what else. Maybe a java fern in the back on it. Will have to do some thinking on it for sure. You have any thoughts?

Something tall in the back/middle of the clump would look really nice, I'm picturing when the leaves are full enough it would create a really neat place for some cover where the leaves hang over the edge of the wood. Either anubias or java ferns would do nicely. You could also try something that can float/doesn't need to root and wrap it around the more vertical branches like Cardamine or Hydrocotyle if you want to try covering it in something with small leaves. If done the right way you can also attach Repens to the wood and they grow in some pretty interesting ways. I'll post some updated pics of my tanks when I get home if you'd like some inspiration.

That would look nice! I may have to try something like that. It will give it that vine like effect. I didn’t know you could do repens like that. I’d love to see some of your tanks if you don’t mind showing them off!

Always! Plus it's been a while since I posted pics for some feedback, if I ever have for some of them. Pics should show in this order, 30 gallon community, 10 gallon community w/ co2, 5 gallon (currently addressing algae), and my new 9g for my wild betta. The order I started the tanks from longest established to newest would be 5g, 10g, 30g, 9g. If you look at the 5 gallon on the driftwood there is a repen that actually was planted in the back of the tank. It grew towards the wood and I had to cut it to reposition after it rooted. You can see where it attached itself sideways as it grew then re-angled towards the light, the roots are still dangling down towards the soil. Its not looking too good right now but it, by far, is one of the coolest ways I've seen this plant naturally grow. That bundle in front that's tucked under the wood is my clump of hydrocotyle. I had shrimp in the tank that totally destroyed it and ate all the leaves but here it is a few weeks later taking back off.

Thank you! The 9g I just threw stuff in there, no idea or plan at all Haha but that's the feel I wanted to give the tank being that it was for a truly wild betta, I wanted to replicate something heavily planted like their natural habitat.

The 30 gallon being a community that's eventually getting a betta I wanted to fill space and make as much cover as possible, the floating plants are anacharis which are there to block some of the filter output. The fake cave on the left is going to come out and in its place will go more driftwood and plants.

That makes sense. The more natural the better for him. Where you get a wild betta?

I was too scared to put my betta in the 36g. I have a 10 gallon with my betta spike. I’ll show a pic of his tank and him.
The filter doesn’t have that blue filter floss on it anymore. Just thought I try a makeshift sponge filter lol

I like the way you have the driftwood, looks nice as an arch. His coloring is beautiful! Always loved the contrast with the vibrant blue and red. I had one imported from Thailand from a breeder. I have more videos then pictures as they don't do him justice.

Might do that tonight after I get home.. late work night and no plans. I will post a link once I do. I tried to do an unboxing of the wilds when I got them in the mail but wasn't very prepared on the position of the camera and ended up deleting it.. haha.

Indeed.. But I cleaned my tanks yesterday and re-housed my female Betta so it's probably the best time to do it . It's a lot easier to hit the "delete" button then wait to upload and see how it turns out. My YouTube is "DSM Nick" if you want to follow me now and catch the video later. Only video there now is a test upload of a friends project car.
