Every time I take out the filter media from the filter to clean it inside of my bucket full of tank water, a lot of gunk gets released into the tank. Is there any way to keep this from happening? I hate having to try to clean the media and having to make such a huge mess.

You can try using a turkey baster to gently suck out the water inside the filter and then gently lift the media into a tray or bucket you have close by.

At least this way you are not pulling up all the excess water at the same time.

Are you turning the filter off before you remove the media? If not, that will help.

You could also lift the filter off the tank, and place over the bucket before removing the media.
