what would you suggest to use for a background? I heard painting is a option. what are others? I would prefer not to see my wall behind my tank. and I'm sure the fish would like to not see their reflections everywhere. suggestions on applying backgrounds/side panels would be great. thank yoiu

you could use paper, those posters from a dollar store, or buy one from petsmart

Personally, I spent $1 on a piece of black foamboard from the dollar store, cut it to size, and taped it in place. Cheapest way to block the view of my wall/cords and make my fish stand out.

If you prefer scenery, the backgrounds you can buy at pet stores can be cut to size and taped on easily.

A poster and poster putty or double sided tape.

Could build a 3D backround by carving and then painting styrofoam and attach with scotch tape or packing tape.

A monitor or screen could be neat.

If you use the backgrounds you buy in a pet store, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the tank, then place the background on the petroleum jelly. Use a straight edge, such as a ruler or a putty knife to press the background against the glass, forcing out the extra petroleum jelly.

This will make the background stay put, and POP. It will look fantastic.

That said, I simply paint my tanks nowadays. Black, or various shades of blue.

I have one painted black and one painted blue. Kinda want to redo the blue one though. I think fish and plants would look way better against black.

Personally I would go with alauriun's idea with the $1 piece of black foamboard from the dollar store. Since I'm in the process of my 75gal build , this is exactly what I'm going to go with for my background.

Thanks alauruin!

Sure, but it’s not in the tank, so there’s no issue.
