My good friend has some tanks and is thinking of getting a tank for a male and female betta. He said that he wants to get a 2.5 gallon...

Tell him he should consider a cactus instead

Tell your friend that they will kill each other. Or show them this forum, and tell them to do some research.

Just tell himwhy that's a bad idea. If he doesn't listen then oh well. I don't consider this a sensitive topic.

Some grass will probably be better. CactI are actually pretty hard to keep, especially in a fish tank.

I tried to tell him this for 15 minutes the other day and he said that males only attack males.

Tell him that bettas attack bettas, and unless he wants to have 300 tiny babies or dead fish, he maybe should opt for keeping a houseplant. Those are nice.

The male WILL kill the female. For sure. Without a doubt he WILL kill her. Your friend needs to do some research.

That's pretty tough but like people have said in the previous comments just show your friend is forum and let him ask that question and I am sure that everyone is going to make sure that he doesn't make the wrong decision or if worse comes to worse I guess just Google or find a video on YouTube or just speak to somebody who knows about fish very well.

Honestly... If it's a good friend and you've tried to tell him/her and they aren't listening it's time to decide... Do you ruin a friendship by being pushy and insistent or let it go they will either research and "change their mind" or do it and prove you right. Either way you gotta understand some people have to figure things out the hard way no matter how much you want to help.

Make some $$$.

If he says that he'll go through with it, there's really nothing you can do to stop a stubborn person who has already set his mind to something.

So make the best out of this situation for yourself. Make a bet with him so that he'll pay you money if he can keep both of them alive and healthy for three months. If they die or have signs of illness, then he pays you. If they're very healthy, then you pay him.

You may also want to keep a betta yourself during this time, to compare health and activity level. Haha it's still cruel for his fish but he'll learn his lesson for sure.

Just be brutally honest with him, show him pictures and videos of when breeding a male and female betta gone wrong (kinda close to them being kept together but the fish get separated soon)! If he doesn't listen he's an irresponsible animal owner. :/

I did make a bet with him. He didn't accept the bet probably because he knows I'm right but is too stubborn to agree.

About all you can do is give them some facts and hope they make the right decision.
2.5 gallons is too small for 1 betta let alone 2
Male and females shouldn't be kept together unless they are breeding.
Females are just as aggressive if not more because they don't have the big fins to hamper their swimming
Females need atleast a ten gallon because they are active swimmers
List would go on and on

Yeah I had one of my breeder females murder a male, because he wouldn't breed with her. I've had an entire sorority massacred by one female that was perfectly fine the week before.
Good luck helping him figure a tank out after he loses his fish.

Or alternatively, show him how much it'll really cost.

Tank, lid, light, food, net, gravel, decor, but also the prices of Prime, Stability, water clearifier, API test kit, water changing bucket, gravel vacuum, fry food culture, fry net, fry tank, almond leaves, heater, filter, filter cartridges, frozen foods, algae cleaner, ich medication, fungus medication, parasite medication, bacteria medication, UV sterilizer, aquarium salt, activated carbon, quarantine tank, etc.

Maybe try showing him a couple articles about the topic online. And some videos on how males/females interact.

Unless he's too stubborn to listen to scientific proof?? In which case, a person like that shouldn't be allowed to have pets...

Show him this, this was my female after being in my breeding tank for 3 days with one of my more docile males.

Ouch.

Thankfully I have only had one girl in the sorority get beat up. But it was nothing like that.

That happened overnight, too.

Thankfully I have only had one girl in the sorority get beat up. But it was nothing like that.
It's all too common when breeding.
