How Old Are the Fish at Petsmart?
How old are the bettafish at Petsmart? I went to check out the Bettas today and most of them seemed really small, there were some that had a body barely bigger than an inch, how old do you think they are?
I'm no expert but I did do a little research about this awhile back and came to the conclusion that Bettas normally live 2-3 years however many people have said to have individuals lasting 5-6 years. The fish sold at like Petco or Petsmart are usually 5-6 months to a year old already. So you could buy a fish and it only last 1 year, or it could live for 6. Id assume the smaller fish are closer to the 5 month mark rather then the year though. Again tho I am no PetSmart supplier so I don't know for certain
It depends on how fast they sell, etc
A friend of mine works at my petsmart and she told me they do not order new fish ( bettas included ) if they aren't moving them.
For example, I bought a Golden Dojo loach at Petsmart - she told me it had been at the store for at least 6 months and based on its size, I am sure it was there at least that long, maybe longer. They did get new batches of Dojo's weekly but this one never got sold - probably because he was already 5 inches big and people bought the smaller babies. I ended up buying one of the babies and didn't want to leave this poor guy by himself.
Why don't you ask the store manager? Usually they order fish weekly depending on how fast they sell. Maybe he/she can give you some insight.
I asked at a local BBS how old they where, the employee didn't have a clue. Maybe I'll send something to Corporate, well that is if they respond. I'd say around 6months to a year. I saw another post that your looking at breeding Bettas, are you using pet store Bettas? Also, Welcome to the forum!
No, I'm not using pet store Bettas. I was there to check out the prices of tanks and to look at the fish.
