I add every once in a while an iron fertilizer (a liquid plant "food" in a plastic bottle) to my tank. I did it more often in the past and now I do it very rarely, sporadically. Remember that adding plant food to your water not only encourages the plants to grow, but it also encourages algae. But considering that you have no fish at this time and no nutrients in the water, you probably need some plant food for now until the plants get established, or until you get fish that will start producing waste and thereby plant food. The problem with my plant food is also that it doesn't say on the bottle how often to add the iron fertilizer to a tank. Does anybody know how often iron fertilizer should be added to a tank? Once you have fish you could stop adding plant food, unless you'll have an effective algae eater that will eat all algae that will grow as a "by-product" of frequent iron fertilizer use. Besides, I think it's best not to be adding any commercial products to your tank at all - except those that you absolutely must, such as a dechlorinator.

Plants need food to survive. In a tank stocked with fish, this food is often fish wastes and various heavy metals in the water. These heavy metals are toxic to fish, so plants are doing fish a favor by consuming them. Plants also consume ammonia and nitrite (and nitrate to a smaller degree) so they're very beneficial to have in a tank.

My bottle says when doing water changes. not very good instructions since some change water more often than others. the company that makes your plant food probably has a website. What are you using by the way?
