How often should filter media be changed

A201

Usually never. In most cases just occasionally rinse your filter media off in a bucket of used tank water.

I agree, what kind do you have?

What kind of sponge material are you using?

Sponges made of cellulose will fall apart rather quickly.
Sponges made of polyurethane should have a lifespan of a few years before they need to be replaced.

The only filter media that require routine replacement or recharging are those designed to absorb impurities. That includes activated carbon, zeolite, Granular Ferous Oxide, etc.

What do you do when you clean it? It should last a long time.

Do you squish it at all? What sponge are you using?

BlueberrytheBetta

I swirl it in a container of fish tank water

I use the sponge that came with the filter

StarGirl

How long has this tank been running? The sponge should last for years. You can replace them but not all at once. What size tank and how many sponges are there?

Nopsu

I use coarse filter sponge bought in sheets and cut to fit in all my filters. Have not had them break at all so I've had the same sponges for 5 years so far. They even have the same bright blue color as they were new.. Despite all the gunk they sometimes hold of course

ppate1977

I've used filter media for half a decade.
