how often or how do i know

    i have had my filter (hob) for about 1 month. honestly i dont know when to change the filter. how can i tell? i seen the one i have and its all brownish, do i just clean that with water or leave it as is. idk....

    All you need to do is give the media a swish in old tank water to remove any large pieces of debris & clean the impeller if that looks gunked up.
    You don't change the media unless it's falling apart or you'll lose all the beneficial bacteria, the only thing that needs replacing every 3-4 weeks is carbon if you use it.

    well it looks like the top of the filter as open a tad and i can see the stuff inside. sounds like i should change it.
