How Nippy Are Serpae Tetras?

KristenLD

So I've heard that serpae tetras can be pretty nippy but is there anyone here who has had any experience with them that can tell me exactly how nippy they are? Would they be okay with longer finned fish in a 29g as long as it isn't too crowded?

I have a few in my 55 gal and i'm never noticed then nipping anyone. I have Cardinals, Rasboras, and Hatchets with them without issues. Smaller tanks increase stress levels though.

Please don't let that scare you away from them. I've had 8 -10 in a 40 gallon breeder tank with pearl gouramis for about 2 years with no issues.

Many shoaling fish will harass tank mates if they don't have enough of their own species to hold their attention and make them feel secure. Six is often given as a minimum, but I'm pretty sure fish can't count, so I generally recommend getting as many as conditions will allow.
