And how large is your tank?
What do you have in your tank?

30% for 3 weeks and on 4th week its 60% for all four of my aquariums

(Always raises the eyebrows of my grocery delivery drivers cos I always order 300 to 500 litres of bottled water every two weeks)

3 x 80 litre and 1 x 65 litre aquariums

What the fish don't use, I do for myself

I guess I'm crazy! 50 to 60% of my 53. More if I'm bored.

My tanks are under stocked with pretty low bioload and lots of plants so I really only do a 15% water change weekly with remineralized ro water.Nitrates seem to hover around 10-20 with ferts.I'm a water testing nerd tho and will adjust my water changes if/when needed.

Normally every Saturday I do 75% on each of my 4 tanks, 2-20, 1-55 and 1-125.
Now that I have been home everyday along with most of the World, I do 50% every 2-3 days

I have a 29g and a 20g high. I just change 20% on both weekly, my 20 is extremely under stocked anyways so I doubt I even need to do that much but whatever the cleaner the better lol

Hello all , I've had so much conflicting information in the past so I decided to join this forum. I need to know how much water to change out. I change my water every Sunday like clockwork.
20 gallon long
20 gallon long
33 gallon long
36 bow front
4.5 BiOrb
15 Fluval Flex
10 gallon hospital tank

All are moderately to heavily planted and not overstocked as far as I know. The only tanks that do not have real plants are the BiOrb which has a betta and the hospital tank. Yes , they are all cycled.
Some have told me 10% , some 20% some 30% and so on. How am I to know ? Lol.

I prefer 50% weekly. 10-30% weekly is less effective.

What does “heavily planted” look like?

Welcome to Fishlore :)

I am a firm believer in changing out half the water each week. The best thing we can do for our water pets is to keep them in fresh clean water. Even though I am changing out half the water each week, once a month I change out even more.

We can get by with less but when it comes to the health of my fish I don't want to just get by. I want to provide these little guys who's lives depend on me with the safest home I can possibly provide for them.

Awe, thank you I love all my fish so much my mother makes fun of me and says they are just fish . And back in her day they changed water once a month. Never vacuumed and never tested. She thinks I'm obsessed and put way too much time and effort into my tanks. Anyways thanks again!!

I don’t think they’re planted enough to allow for less water changing, especially the first tank.

I simply hate it when others tell fishkeepers they’re doing too much to their tanks and don’t come to think a hobbyist would know more than them.

How are the parameters keeping in those tanks? The amount of water changed and how often for each tank for me would depend on how stable the parameters are. I'd imagine you can do much less water changes with the planted tanks for example, versus the BiOrb and the hospital tank, the latter cases where nitrate for example might keep on rising and potentially pretty fast. But if the parameters are pretty stable, I'd only do a water change every month or so, or more. As for the amount of water change, I'd probably do a 20% water change, unless that would cause you to have to do a water change more regularly than weekly, then just whatever amount would help.

I don't mind water changing at all. I actually enjoyed it. Im thinking it's time for a python. I lug way too many 5 gallon buckets around haha

I also believe in changing no less then 50% water weekly in cycled tanks regardless of nitrates (assuming they are low).

50 percent once a week. Okay and how often do you gravel vac? Also do you have a python ?

Parameters are pretty much stable in all of my tanks. My tank with the most plants stays at 5ppm nitrates. The others stay around 10 to 20. Zero ammonia zero nitrites. Ph 6.8-7.0 I was doing 15% every Sunday and haven't had problems I just have had so many different information on how much. I'm fairly new to the hobby and wanted to make sure I was changing out enough. I worry too much.

We do 50-75% a week on our 55,29,20,8, and 5… haven’t checked parameters in as long as I can remember and everyone thrives.

Yeah you would be changing enough out then, given that stability. Could even start transitioning to longer periods of time between water changes if you like, but if you are happy with doing 15% every week, that's fine too! ^_^

Weekly water changes provide me with most of the exercise I get. Lol. I don’t use a python either.

I still use buckets. I have had to start making more trips outside to dump the water. I used to be able to comfortably lift and carry 4 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket but now I just put 3-3 1/2 gallons in it. I use a 2 gallon bucket for refilling. Before much longer I may have to cut the 2 gallon down to 1 1/2 gallon at a time. For my 55 gallon tank I have to lift and pour it 12 times. After doing a water change on the 55 the smaller tanks are a breeze :D

I have trimmed the small ones down to 2-5 gallon, one 2.5 gallon shrimp bowl and one 2.5 gallon snail jar. I do the 55 one day and all the others the next. I will continue using buckets for removing water but before long I will have hubby rig up an easier way for me to refill. :)

I do weekly 50% changes cause experienced people told me to. In the year and a half that I've had two small tanks, my fish have remained healthy and active.

There's no maximum to water changes....the minimum to water changes is a more interesting question :D

The problem is, you might find out you're not doing enough when your animals get sick.

I didn't know how lazy I am till I retired. I'd do zero changes if possible.

I don't have a python but I have a syphon that sucks up waste. I also have sand so I vac any waste every water change which is weekly. I do a good "deep clean" of the sand like once per month just to aerate it a bit.
