How Much To Feed Oscar

Hi, I have an juvenile oscar fish that's around 4 inches. He eats very actively and appears to be very healthy.

I understand the as much as they can eat in 2-3 minutes rule but that just doens't make sense. My oscar can eat 5 pellets in 2 seconds. And I also heard the stomach of a fish is about the size of its eyeball. and the eye of my fish isn't too big. Currently I just feed him 4-6 hikarI minI pellets (not very minI imo) 2 times a day. And like I said before, it only lasts around 2 seconds for feeding time to be over.

So how much do I actually feed him?

Only some fish have small stomachs . Oscars do not and can handle larger pieces of food. Their stomachs are much larger than their eye. I would say 4-6 pellets is not enough for that fish. He can be fed twice a day. Oscars are gluttons.

30 seconds!, that's bnetter than 2-3 minutes, but 30 seconds! That is still so much, he is only 4 inches, and in 30 second, he would eat +20 pellets. Do you think 7 "mini" hikarI pellets (not very mini) would be good per feeding or should I feed more. Its just even 7 looks like so much.

You need more variety in his diet or he’ll get hole in the head disease, among being unhealthy. Trust me, he needs more, my 6 inch Jaguar Cichlid will eat 3 entire cubes of frozen food in a minute.

I do have variety. I give him frozen peas, freeze dried grasshopper, fd meal worms, and fd crickets. Do you think 5 pellets and a grasshopper would be good. the grass hoppers are quite big.

He's still quite young at 4 inches. An adult Oscar can swallow a 2-3 inch goldfish with no problem. They have big mouths and will eat anything they can fit in it.

Wow, I looked them up and they get huge. They're bigger than Oscars.

And adult oscar can eat another fish nearly the same size as themselves.

Like others have mentioned, oscars eat a ton and require a wide range of food to stay healthy. Theyll eat almost anything you put in front of them, so you'll need to figure out exactly what he requires. Obviously don't give him a whole bag of pellets, but 4-6 minI pellets isn't very much.

Yes they have small stomachs especially at this age. I still don’t think what you’re feeding it is enough.
