How much to change each week,

SirFinn

I just moved to a slightly larger tank, how much water should I be changing each week, I went from a 5-gallon to a 10-gallon. I was using water stabilizers and chem to help me out with the move.
i only have 7 tiny fish I hope the space is enough for them :)

What kinda fish are they? And is that plant real? On my 10gal I change 10-15% each week but mine is heavily planted, for your tank I'd probably do 20-25%

7 fish can be a lot for a ten gallon creating a lot of waste. What types of fish are they? Do you do weekly water parameter checks? That determines how often and how much you need to do changes.

Yes the plant is real, and there is three tetras, two guppies and two silver gourami three snails

Hello sirFin. Did you have all the fish in the 5G?

Whilst I commend you for upgrading the tank to give the fish more space I’d not count gouramis ( unless sparkling ) as small fish. And I’d not keep 2 in a 10G I’m afraid ( getting up to 15cm as adults ) The tetras could be a similar story but you didn’t say which type , but I will say they’d likely appreciate a larger number of them to shoal with.

Sorry to say but dependant on the tetra species I’d re home the gourami’s and choose either the tetras or the guppies and up the schools.

I have a 20 gallon set up and I do 50% water change a week. I also have several plants

Those silver gouramis are going to get pretty large and possibly aggressive if they do not have adequate space. I wouldn’t recommend keep any gourami species (not talking about bettas) in a 10 gallon because of aggression and size.
Do you do water testing?

no I only had three fish in that tank, I was told to have healthy fish I could only have a couple in that one

oh I did not know about the gouramis, I will have to change them out then, I don't want my fish to be unhealthy and eating each other

That’s good that you’re willing to do so. What tetra species do you have ?
And are the guppies both males ?

We haven’t checked water parameters in any of our 5 tanks in forever. We do 50-75% WC’s every 5-7 days no matter what. We have a 5-8.8-20 long-29 and a 55 gallon.

A good rule of thumb regarding water changes is to change out 35% - 50% weekly.
Small tanks should lean towards the larger percentage.
Certain varieties of fish, such as Discus, require 100+% weekly WC's.

I have a lone three spot gourami in a 10g on a sponge filter, maybe it's 4-5" or so mouth to tail, there were two but one died of old age. I think "silver gourami will get to 6-7" and will probably dominate a 10g.

Anyways, I just do a 50% water change per week, 5 gallons with a quick gravel vac and glass wipe down, takes maybe all of 15 minutes. I don't even check water parameters anymore. It's always good.
Seems kind of pointless to change 1 or 2 gallons, and I'm doing a weekly water change on my other tanks anyways, might as well give it a quick once over. My 20g is the same, A spawning pair of angelfish maybe 20 minutes to change 50%, also never a problem and don't bother to check it anymore, but tanks ran and run under 5ppm nitrates per week.

I feel like as long as you are changing 100% of the water in the tank per month or more, it can't go wrong on you. It might be a bit wasteful with water, but also nothing wrong with running a tank with really low nitrates thats doesn't have poop and uneaten food breaking down in it all month.

Doesn't matter much if it's 10x1 gallon a month, or 2x5 gallons a month, or anywhere in between, although it's a bad idea to change 100% 1x a month. Doing it in parts will leave some waste behind but the 100% change keeps it all minimal over the course of the month, there's not much build up remaining.

To be honest though, I kind of have the gourami and the angel pair in those tanks out of necessity.
I really want to use the 10g for Cardinal tetras or celestial pearl danios. And the 20g for M. ramirezi, regular old rams. in general those two species for whatever the reason, I never see in the fish stores around me. I just can't bring myself to part with the fish I currently have and rehome them and can't put them elsewhere to free up the space.

It depends. I find my smaller tanks gunk up quicker and always need 50% WC to properly gravel vacuum. On the larger ones 35-40% does the trick. This is every two weeks and my results have been positive. But all of my tanks are lightly stocked. There were periods in the past where I did WC and vac every 2 months or so and the fish did just fine. I had many old timers in fact.

thank you for letting me know this, I am changing an African cichlid 29-gallon over to a community, would these gouramies do ok in that one?? I have not decided what other fish I could add.
