Ok here's the real question, I've been on the forum for about a week and everybody is friendly and just as in love with there aquariums as I am with mine and I've put a quite a bit of money into mine and I know you guys have to, so add up how much money you've spent including setting up the tank and stocking it with plants and fish how much you've spent on your tank lol then post it. it'll be fun to compare!

Mine is about 600-700 but that's just a geuss I'll add up the true number later

This is a scary thought.... And a long calculation...

Over £2500 ... $4300 on 12 fish tanks, 1 snail tank.

Horrified. Wish I hadn't added that up.
I'm off to sulk in a corner now...

I wouldn't even want to know.... I get bored of my tank looks very quickly, so I end up buying and replacing decorations, buying plants they die because I don't know how to look after them or Helena eats them, or they thrive and I give them away because I want prettier ones...

If I had to guess, maybe £800 or more, I have two tanks, 75 litre and a little betta tank (no idea how big it is, I think it's a 4.5 gallon). I have gone through up grades and different substrates a few times, I have started buying driftwood too, so I have that in both tanks now.

Last time I went to the fish shop I spent over 60 pound....

It's a zero-sum game for me, but one where I am obviously the sole participant. I put a lot into my tank but I get a lot out of it.

Oh man. If my husband knew I've spent probably close to 1,000. He would kill me. But I do have 4 running...

Very true. I went to sulk in the corner... Saw all my tanks and realised that they are worth every penny and more. You can't put a price on the enjoyment it brings!

I have 4 running at the moment. I've spent close to $1000 probably more actually.. I have spent probably $600 on fish alone because of shipping and I have expensive taste on the actual fish themselves, I guess that's the girl side of me lol and now I'm about to spend a couple hundred more dollars on my water dragon lol. When I think about it it saddens me haha but it's so worth it.

I just recently got a 72 gallon bowfront for my birthday. Total costs with tank, stand, glass lid, led lights, 1 hob filter, plants ( fake and some real ) decor, Tahitian moon sand,

$1,300.00 give or take a few dollars

I was also horrified...thought about husband realizing total TOTAL - went in a corner to sulk with Hollie - then realized like Adam55 how much I get out of it.....

PRICELESS.......

The thing is, I try also not to put a price on things either but since you asked...... If I ENJOY it, it doesn't matter what it costs and that's all that matters.

A few weeks ago I was bored and wondered the same question. I spent $788 on 4 complete setups and all the fish. 2 tanks were brand new which was 29 gallon and a 10g. Otherwise the 55 gallon and my 3.5g were used.
Check my tank info for equipment and fish.

I don't regret a single cent spent on them! I love my fish, they are my therapy when I'm having a bad day I'll just pull up a chair next to the Cichlid tank and sit with them.

I Have been having A lot of health issues the past few months and almost had to sell them (not being able to take care of tanks and being in the hospital for days on end and not knowing if we have power at the house with the bad storms and flooding) But I'm glad I got through it so far and every day gets better! Even in bad health I still like taking care of them and doing maintenance.

I completely agree, we all might spent a lot on our tanks but it's worth every penny with the enjoyment it bring, it keeps me sane haha. But yeah I think it's around 800$ and I like expensive fish to lol

Been in the hobby 4 years now. No clue what I've "invested" in my fish.
Probably enough to buy a good 2nd hand car.

Hey, it's cheaper than therapy. Hmm, maybe we have a medical write off here eveyone.

In the last year I bought a lot of equipment to breed, raise, and house bettas. But I also spend a lot to make my tanks more habitable and attractive than anyone who was only doing it as a business. Someone who was only breeding for money would not spend $1000's on equipment to grow plants in all these betta growout tanks, for instance. But the number exceeds $10K over the last two years. It will be a long time before I sell enough bettas to pay back the expense, but then again, if I was in it for the money I would be doing something else. I just love my little bettas.

There's days like today where I am so glad I have my tanks. Something to stop my brain working overtime and relax me. Something I need in my life to remind me just how beautiful the world is.x

Gosh, I usually just try not to think about this... For my 20 gallon I think I've sunk about $430 into it, give or take about $20. My 2.5 gallon has only cost me about $70, and my now decommissioned 5 gallon has probably accumulated about $100 worth of expenses, for a grand total of around $600, give or take a bit. And I'm thinking about adding another tank as well, which would raise the number above $1000... Why did you have to make me think about it? Lol.

my 23g tank kit was about 170, taxes included. I returned the filter for a 25 dollar credit, and purchased a new aqua clear filter for 50. I purchased a ton of supplies, like a gravel vacuum, a couple of five gallon buckets for water changes, small pitchers to help with water changes, gravel, accessories, air pump/stone, prime, cycle, etc...all in all, it has probably run me about 500 dollars so far. i've only owned the tank for about 6 weeks. lol. so...I can imagine I'll be dropping significantly more money on sprucing the thing up as time goes on!

Well... I can tell you this. The spending sometimes becomes exponentially greater over time. Eventually, you just want perfection. An impossibility you are willing to spend thousands to attain.

For instance... my dream tank (which who knows when I will afford)... will be a 90 gallon starphire glass aquarium that's heavily planted with Discus fish. So, maybe $3000 usd for that one alone?

Historically...It it is tough to tell. I have recently tried to up my game and probably dropped $570 in the last three months. If I had to go into the past then I would say, a rough guess of coming close to a grand but that is over 10 years.

Woahhhh lol if we took all the money we spent on tanks and invested it in stocks we'd all be rich! But honestly I love my tank so much, I wouldn't trade it or the experiences that came with it for the world <3

Nah, ours is a sound investment. Stock market's too risky.

Hmmm....if I want to be honest I would say about....1000 or so...it depends. I honesty lost clung then there is the fact I am re-scapeing my tanks right now. Betta summer. Work on the 20 gallon this fall. Sneak a 5 gallon in my room for Christmas to me...wait you didn't see that guess its a good thing I'm single right now.

in all actuality though I enjoy it this has been very relaxing after I lot my cat ten months ago I still miss him terribly. But I have moved on.

Wow, I wouldn't know the exact number if I wanted to! It is definitely in the thousands of dollars - but that's over the span of a decade with many tanks, plants, and fish. That said, as terrifying as it is to think of that big a number, I really don't regret spending any of that money. My tanks have been well worth it when I think of how much happiness (okay, and stress) they've brought me.

I figure for the hours of entertainment I get out of my fish it's cheaper than other forms of entertainment. It would cost me a lot more to get that many hours of entertainment at a movie theater for sure!

Okay well let's see if I can so this without crying lol.

55 gallon tank/stand setup brand new $550
Filters/heaters/spare sponges $150-200
Ecoxotic 48" LED glass hoods some plant products $330
Water conditioner/plant additives $50-100
Plants $150 (went through some bad trail and error)
10 cardinals last week $32 (6 survived)

Also tank/stand was probably a bad buy but I knew nothing about petco $1/gal sale at the time and I really wish I had the skills/time to build my own stand (will be making one next year for sure though).

So around $1200 and only just started getting fish and still looking at some more plants I need/want. I enjoyed my tank for many hours even when I just had plants alone and no fish. It is worth every penny to me but my dad just can't get over spending $300 on a light for my plants lol. Thankfully I still live at home and only have about $300 in bills for the month and my gas $$$ rest is for whatever I want to use it on.

How much money have you spent on fish and plants that died prematurely? How much money was spent on equipment that broke or was replaced because it wasn't satisfactory. Supplies not used, like that pH up stuff that everyone thinks they need when they first start. Or other wastage, like the betta food and shrimp eggs that my cats keep tearing into.

I'd hate to answer these honestly, lol, I have a huge area in my garage full of unused aquarium stuff.

  • #34
I can think of a few decorations, as I get tired of looking at the same stuff but not to many it would have to be pretty eye catch. Being new 9 or 10 months into it and limited to two tanks not much in wastage...yet.

9 tanks >300.00, sold one tonight so minus 25.00 from that leave over 275.00 looking to sell 5 other tanks before long.
LFS store I now use a lot >400.00 not including about 50.00 in freebies.
Pet Smart and Pet Co. >100.00
Ebay >200.00
Miscellaneous >100

Seems over 1k so far. OUCH, oh well. But I am narrowing down to 2 tanks plus a QT/HP tank when I am done.

Hope to make a few buck back out of stuff I am working on selling. But still I have enjoyed my little friends and though I am simplifying down it has been worth it to me.

At least $1000 on our 75gal.
The lighting alone was $300.

That's basically counting what I have currently.
Not the plants that died, and the fish we've lost.
And I got 5 of our guppies for only $1 each!

Annnd... About $250 on the 20 gallon Long.

Oye vey!

I want to say maybe 3-400$ on my 20gal, and about 100$ the betta tank. But that's only lower because the tank was a gift. I still have two more tanks not set up, I don't have enough furniture lol.
