Well actually I was just wondering the same thing myself the other day.

I calculated I own about $600 worth of equipment (tanks, hoods, heaters, filters).
I'm guessing I've spent close to $1000 on fish so far.
This is for a 10gal, a 20gal, another not-quite-set-up 20gal, and a 10gal q tank.
And this from someone who can't even get a job yet....

Yeah, I am probably in the hundreds, too. I'd say at least $500, between tanks, decor, fish, plants and lighting. Most likely more like $800. Hmm, I guess I had better slow down on this hobby!

29 gallon freshwater
To start close to 200$ and it's probably close to 1,000 now from plants, fish, lighting, filters, heaters, food etc.

5.5 Saltwater tank
Close to 300$ on Live Rock, lighting, testing equipment, hardware, and livestock. Planning on spending another couple hundred by the end of the year between the two tanks or get a Wii, haven't decided yet but first I need to get a real job once I'm 16 in a month :;rab

I got my first tank (15 gallon) for free and thought, 'Great, I'll get a couple inexpensive fish and have a cool hobby and some nice fish to watch for a few bucks..'

Then I got a better filter... plants... lights... a heater... more fish... testing kit...

Then I decided I needed bigger and more exotic fish and got a 55 gallon for a couple hundred..

Pretty soon I had to have some Discus, so I got another 80 gallon for a few more hundred..

Had to upgrade all filters and all lights..

Always getting new fish...

And new tanks...

That 'few bucks' quickly turned in to 'a few thousand bucks'...

And I'm still dreaming of more tanks and more fish.

MTS. When does it end? Pretty soon I'm gonna end up like Dino :;z and just buy out Sea World.

Kevin
  • #20
i'll split sea world with you...after that we can buy out ripleys aquariums...then start our own line of fish products and stores...then go into breeding the really expensive fish

Put it this way.. more money is spent on our tanks and their inhabitants than our car, and we still haven't bought a digital camera yet!!.. still, as far as we're concerned, it's money well spent considering how therapeutic fish can be melting away day to day stress.

It's amazing how you don't know how much money you have spent on your fish until you look at the reciepts and add it up.

Ask away!!!!

It does not mean you'll get any!!!

Thankfully, I have reached the point that I am starting to make money on this hobby.

It only took 27 years to get to that point.

I have gotten most of my stuff as gifts or freebees so I think I got lucky:

38 gallon tank: about $300 (got the tank, stand, filter, heater and decor as a gift )
(3)10 gallon tank: about $50
2.5 gallon tank: free!

Grand total: about $350

I would be afraid to look at all of the reciepts I have kept in case I ever take my fish back (a little pen on the dates and it is as good as new :;rab)

well, i'm at .5 years now, so that means around christmas of 2033 I'll start making profit. !

LOL.... great replies~
My husband said to me the other day.. " Do you realize how much we have spent on the fish and supplies?" I looked at him calmly and said " yes I do!"
jeesh.. He reminded me of the conversation I had with him about five months or so ago when I said.. " honey.. I found a great deal at the thrift store, I got a 10 gallon tank with heater and filter for only 5 bucks!" That was the start of it. Now its 3 ten gal tanks, one 2.5g, two 29 gallon and one 55gal.....and all the supplies in between!
Have we spent over a thousand dollars in the last five months on fishkeeping? yes we have.... not done yet but have to slow down at some point! lol..
Of course I have my eye on an addition of two gorgeous discus fish right now...
