How much Biogold to feed?

I'm confused about the directions on the Biogold. It says "5 to 10 pellets up to 3 times a day". But that could be anywhere between 10 and 30 pellets a day! (Assuming the minimum number of times you'd feed would be twice a day.)

Do they mean between 5 and 10 pellets a day, spread out over up to 3 feedings? I'd try to do the whole "as much as he can eat in two minutes" thing, but so far Smoky doesn't rush straight to his food and eat it up straight away, so he might only have consumed one pellet within two minutes.

Does anyone have a definite answer on this? Or at least a ballpark figure? If I feed him 5 pellets three times a day, does that sound right? They are Betta Biogold, smaller than some pellets I've seen, but larger than others.

Also, is it better to feed twice or three times a day? I've been doing three times, but not sure I'll be able to keep it up consistently (might forget, be away for lunch, etc) so if morning+evening is equally okay I'll do that to avoid switching things around too much.

ETA: Okay, so I was reading on Google and apparently some people only feed 5 Biogold pellets per day total. Which means I have been massively overfeeding him for the past four feedings. Will he be okay? Should I fast him for the rest of the day (skip evening meal)? I could fast him tomorrow as well, but since he's just taken to his food recently, I don't want him to get unaccustomed to it again unless you feel that's absolutely necessary.

ETA (2): Some people talk about feeding a pea once a week. Would it be good to do this on, or after, his once-a-week "fast" day?

Good morning,

IMO, feeding 3 times a day for adult fish is way too much. As long as everyone gets a bite or 2, once per day is all that is really needed. If someone misses out, they probably not miss out the next morning. I feed my fish once a day, every day.

I use NLS foods (Thera +A) as a staple and then I feed treats twice per week. I also soak my treats in Garlic Guard and Vita Chem.

Too, I feed my bottom dwellers a slice of raw zucchinI stuffed with wafers and food sticks every morning. Stuffing the slice helps to keep the other fish from stealing the food before the bottom dwellers have a chance to eat.

For my Silver Dollars and all fish eat it, I put in a leaf of Romaine Lettuce:

Feeding peas once a week is a good idea too.

Remember, over feeding can lead to increased Ammonia and Nitrate levels. Feed sparingly and your fish should be fine.

For Bettas, 2 or 3 pellets per day should suffice.

Okay, obviously I've been feeding him way too much! I'll feed him less from now on.

He's a betta on his own, so thankfully I don't have the "is everyone getting enough?" issue with pushy eaters (had enough of that worry with my guinea pigs LOL).

Thanks for your help Aquarist!

ETA: I'm aware that he should probably have some bloodworms or something as well as pellets. Is freeze-dried okay? Seems like everyone on this forum prefers the frozen ones in the big packs, but as I don't have a car to get them home or my own freezer to store them, freeze-dried is really my only option. :/

Hi, I was wondering is someone has a more definitive answer on the Betta Biogold? I've been feeding him four pellets twice a day (it's the "perfectly sized pellet"); it says 5-10 up to three times a day, but I thought that would be too much. But now I'm seeing Smoky scavenging across the bottom of his tank trying to eat whatever waste is down there. Does that mean he's hungry?

Also, if I fast him tomorrow and then feed him a pea, should I feed him the pea tomorrow night (24 hours after last feed), or the next morning (36 hours after last feed)? And if it's the next morning, should I also feed him his pellets with/after the pea, or replace his breakfast with the pea?

Most fish are greedy & would eat every hour of the day.
Bettas in particular are very good at 'training' their owners to feed them by almost begging every time they approach the tank.
2-3 pellets a day is enough, you can if you want spread it out & just feed one pellet 3 times a day.
I'd crush & feed the pea in the morning, no pellets on that day to allow the pea to go through his system.

Thanks Coradee!

So does that mean I should feed him the pea on his fast day? Does it still count as a fast day then, or do I need to do another complete fast day without a pea?

Feed the pea the day after the fast day, don't forget to deshell it first

Thanks Coradee!

I tried the pea and it sank really fast and he didn't eat it. It landed on top of his log decoration so I left it there all day thinking he might get hungry, but off to siphon it up now.

Crush it into bite size bits for him & he may be more inclined to eat it.
