I have a 40 gallon breeder tank and i was wondering if 150 watts is enough to heat it to about 76 degrees.

Depends how cold the room gets. 150W would be sufficient if the room doesn't get particularly chilly (like 10 or 20F below the set temp for long periods).

well at night it can go down to 68 degrees in my room so i don't know how cold the tank would get. i have a 50 watt in there but that's not enough power.

If 68 is as cold as it gets 150w should cope ok however there's no harm in going a size up to 200w.

Well for 10 bucks you could give it a try. Bear in mind there might be a reason that it's so cheap.
