So I am planning to have a 5 gallon betta tank. I want to keep the temp at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Now I have a 50 watt heater and room temperature is 70 degrees Farenheit. How many watt would I be using cause I am only allowed to keep a betta if it wouldn’t cost too much. Is there any way to calculate this or kinda guess How much it would cost?

I run a 100W heater in my 5.5's it will hold the temp better and allow to raise the temp easier incase its needed. Also won't kick on as often which should save on some wattage usage.

You won't even notice a difference in the bill. Maybe a dollar a month. Here is a table I found online that will give you a general idea:

Heater Cost per Month

The only disadvantage to using a larger heater in a small aquarium is service life. All electrical switches have a service life. The more they kick off and on, the shorter their service life is. A larger heater will have an easier time regulating the temperature, but will kick off and on more than a smaller heater because it takes longer for that smaller heater to get your tank up to temp. Therefore, (theoretically) shortening the useful service life of the larger heater.

Another thing I want to mention. I suggest keeping your betta tank at minimum of 78 degrees. He will enjoy it much more.

Thank you When I calculated it it was like 100 dollars per year

Yeah The temp Will only be that low in the winter( trying to convince My parents to let me raise it.) cause in summer I won’t Even have to use the heater.

Using the chart I linked to was $100 a year? Or the calculations you did on your own?

Well My parents caclulated it. Also I don’t know How a heater really does its Job is it like constantly on or does it turn on whenever is needed?
Also I don’t know How long it would be on per day is there any way to figure that out?

Your heater will turn off and on according to the preset temperature as determined by the thermostat. There should be an indicator light to identify when it is on and energized (heating the water).
Simply put, aquarium heaters convert electricity to heat through an element/coil.
There are a lot of variables that would factor into how long your heater runs on average per day

I’m not aware of a website that has a calculator or anything like that. Someone else may be able to chime in though.
If you really wanted to (and you were bored enough) you could watch it for a few hours (3) and track how long it was on and then multiply that by 8 to get a VERY rough estimate for how long it’s on each day
