How many shrimp to start with?

Hi, i have a spare 7 gallon tank that I used to use for raising fry and I intend to set it up as a shrimp tank. My wife likes the yellow cherry shrimp. I can't get them at my local shop but there are online suppliers. What's the minimum number I should get to start a colony?

I recently brought 8 yellow cherry shrimp from abquatics.shop NSW. I culled a couple on arrival. I can’t recommend the colour of their stock two months ago. I have since picked up a couple in the town near Queanbeyan .
. “Second nature aquariums” in Orange NSW had some very nice yellow stock last week. In my opinion you need 5 good shrimp to start a colony. If however you are buying online you may need to buy 10 and cull right from day one. The males have less colour always. And juveniles don’t show their best colour until they mature. If buying juveniles you would be best to wait a few weeks/ a month before removing any in my opinion.

Thanks mate there's a few other online shops selling them for around $7-$8 each but I know that shop in Orange I go there fairly often so I'll check it out. Will probably be a few weeks before the tank is ready though.

if you intent to cull any when they arrive first id give it 4days to settle then the lighter ones put in a separate tank dont kill them, some shrimp dont colour up until just before mating and thats around 4 to 5 months, you may be killing good shrimp
