How many neon tetra in newly cycled tank?

Hey ya’ll! Another quick question — tomorrow I get my first fish in my newly cycled 55 gallon tank! I did a fishless cycle using Ace Hardware ammonia and am currently processing 1ppm of ammonia to 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite in 24 hours. What would be a reasonable # of neon tetra to add to the tank? I know they are happiest in schools so I’d like to do as many as I can together at once without harming the bioload. Thanks! :)

Thanks for the response! Glad to know I can do a pretty large school. I suppose they are pretty tiny fellows with a small bio load!

They are indeed, and when they all swim together in such big groups it is almost magical, but are you having the tank with just neons? No other tankmates?

It will eventually be a tetra community tank! Final stock will likely be some combo of the neons with black neons, Colombian tetra, and rosy tetra. Was going to start the tank off with black neons since I hear they are the hardiest of those options but our LFS doesn’t have them in yet so I’ll be starting things off with the neons tomorrow. Since I want to do all of these tetra I might shoot for 15 neons tomorrow and call it good for that school.

Sounds like a solid plan!, just remember to add the fish slowly you don’t want to undo your cycle

It's a shame your LFS doesn't have black neons. They're one of my favorites, and you're right. They're very hardy.

Serpae tetras are another one, and they're readying available (at least I don't think I've ever seem a fish store that didn't have them).

Lemon tetras are my next favorite.
