How Many Mystery Snails For My 10g?

I know the limit for a 10 gallon with a betta is 5 snails, but I don't really need all 5. I'm really going back and forth between 2 or 3 snails. Just curious to hear opinions on what others would choose. So far it is just my betta and a few live plants, driftwood and a zebra rock.

(I do have another tank, filter, and heater if it doesn't work out.)

Mystery snails do have a surprisingly high bioload. That being said, I don't see why you couldn't have 2-3 in there. Just keep an eye on your water parameters and water changes. Like most inverts, they are very susceptible to ammonia, nitrites, and high nitrates. Also, with multiple mystery snails (assuming you have both genders), keep an eye out for egg clutches above the water line. Remove them if you don't want 2-3 snails to become 202-203 in a couple weeks.

Thanks. The lid to my tank is mostly flat and there is usually a half inch of space between the water line and lid, so I would easily be able to see clutches to remove them.

I'm more so having trouble deciding between getting 2 or getting 3. Like I definitely want 2, but I may possibly want a third just to get more color variety, lol.

I would say it depends on how many decorations and/or plants you have in your aquarium. If there are a lot of places for them to disappear to I would definitely do 3 so you'll see them more often.

I definitely understand wanting variety. From the sounds of it, if it were me, I'd pick my absolute favorite 2 colors and get one of each. Down the road, if your parameters are all still good and stable, you could add a third. Have you seen the purple ones? They're my favorite. More difficult to find though. A fellow members here Ryan1824 sells and ships them as well as pretty much any other color. Also, last of all, don't assume you will see egg clutches in that half inch of space. They are surprisingly good at hiding them. Pretty much, if you don't want babies, open the lid and inspect above the water line daily.

Good advice, thanks. I would say my tank is maybe about half covered currently, though I plan to add a few more plants soon.

I have seen them! I definitely want to get a purple if I can manage. I am really debating between 2 purples, a purple and a magenta, 2 purples and a magenta, or 1 purple, 1 magenta, 1 blue. I guess getting 2 purples or a purple and a magenta would be good for now, and maybe getting a blue later. Blues are definitely a lot easier to find it seems.

Yeah, blue, ivory, gold, and black are pretty easy to find in my area. Purple and magenta are both pretty much something that has to be shipped. I can't decide if magenta, blue, or ivory are my second favorite. Lol.

I don't have many options in my area unfortunately. My LFS that is really nice doesn't carry mystery snails, my Petco doesn't carry any freshwater snails, and my PetSmart only ever has black or gold. I think I'll probably end up going with a purple and a magenta for now if I can get them. Thanks for all the help and advice!

No problem! It's pretty weird that they don't carry freshwater snails. To me anyway.

Also, if you did decide to breed them, I think it would be very interesting to see which color, purple or magenta, is more dominant. Assuming you got one of each gender.

When I asked one of the Petco employees about snails, they said the snails would pretty much die right away when they got them so that store stopped carrying them. I have 2 PetSmarts that are roughly the same distance from me, and they are also like night and day compared to each other. One is super nice, has really well taken care of tanks, their mystery snails are quite big already and they have separate tanks for each type of snail and each color of mystery (this is the one that has black and gold, they have tags for blue and ivory but those are always empty.) The other doesn't even keep their snails on display; they keep them all in one of those plastic critter carriers in the back and they are very small comparatively.
