How many cichlids would fit in a 55gal?

I'm gonna do like an Amazon tank in my 55gal, what type of cichlids would work in there?

 

There are a bunch of different possibilities, it is just based on your preference to the look of the fish. Visit your lfs and take notes of the cichlids you like, and come back with the results.

It depends.. if you stack them, you can fit more in but if you sit them side by side, I think you get less in. :

really, it's like Tom said, a matter of your personal preference.. just keep the tank within the 1" of adult size fish per gallon, leaving room for a school of otos and/or corys.

ecnaj143, definitly read up first, an amazon environment is an excellent choice, it's basically what I have with my angels, right down to my amazon sword plants. Just understand most amazon cichlids are VERY agressive, and can get quite big, so you'll have to choose carefully. I've read that firemouth cichlids are very tough and good cichlid "starter fish".

it was bad.. yet a laugh.. : good advice and the firemouths are pretty cool looking fish too.

 

With the more aggressive cichlids you tend to overstock the tank along with overfilter to keep the aggression down, but it all depends on the species you get. I believe a firemouth and convict go well together actually, though not quite sure on the convict would have to check on that and whether you like that type. Angels are quite peacefull cichlids, so are the dwarf species and rams.

i'm having an amazonn displayy i'm having hekelli, firemouth, blue acar, orange heads and angles my tanks 70 gallon ;D Callum!

 

hey I was soon to be pputting my fish in my 70 gallon I had planned for it to be a south american amazon display I planned for
3 veil angels
2 hekelii
2 red horse face
2 blue acars
2 black lancer cats
2 pictus
2 kribs
1 bn
2 firemouths
4 red forest jewel chiclids
and about 5 or so clown loaches
I had planned for rivulatus but heard they were abit aggressive but would they be ok
and some school for that are bigger enough not to get eaten that's it
I have a few fake plant some verigated rush amazon swords anubiuas will these be ok

It all depends on which species of Amazon fish you'd like...we have angels, tetra, plecos. We are getting breeding trio of Gymnogeophagus australis. The only get 4-5"
