Hi, I have just put my 5 Panda Corys from my quarantine tank and in to my display tank, and now ready to put more in the quarantine tank, and I want some Amano Shrimp to eat some of my green hair alge.

But how many Amano Shrimp can I buy at the time, how much bioload are they producing? is 10 to much?
I'm going to put them in my non cycled Quarantine tank for 4 weeks, whit 50 % water changes everyday is that too much?

My setup:

- Fish : no fish

Water:
Kh : 20
GH : 20
Ph 8
Ammonia : 0
Nitrit : 0
Nitrat : 14

Temperature:
24 C

Add as many as you would like. Shrimp have minimum bioloads and their bioload only comes from their poop.

I would not put them in an uncycled tank, they need an established tank.

Actually I see no problem putting shrimp in an uncycled tank. The main reason we don't is because of food problems so honestly I would say get the shrimp but only a couple at a time and make sure they are getting dedicated feedings in QT.

I have a loong way from my fish store you say a couple at a time, what if I buy 10 and put in my quarantine tank, as long they are getting food enough they will bee fine?

I read somewhere that they are sensitive for water changes is do you know if that's true?

Ok full stop.... first off when you say uncycled I assume you mean your nitrogen cycle has not completed. Adding anything to this tank is potentially fatal. Amano are the toughest of all shrimp but you will kill them with hI ammonia levels and you can expect some molting issues with 50% water changes.
Sorry but more bad news, the shrimp are not going to help your hair algae problem. The only way to effectively clear that up is to solve why you have it in the first place. Identify the cause....
Now, good news depending on what you have in your main tank, why not just add the Amano to it directly. It’s very rare thought not impossible for shrimp to carry a disease that would hurt your tank. This assume your buy good quality shrimp from the get go.

Please read up on how to acclimate them properly to the tank that you’re going to put them in. Also,10 is not a bad number to start with as others have pointed out the bioload is very low.

I would just like to point out that shrimp don't have any bioload except for their poop, they don't excrete ammonia like fish do That is why only a few is reccomended.

Sorry friend I am Going to have to agree to disagree with you. They do have a bioload it is small but to say don't have a bioload is just not accurate. I have sustained a health colony of beneficial bacteria in a shrimp only tank. So they do produce ammonia which is consumed by the BB. Hope this clears up any misconceptions.

I should of clarified on my part, their poop is the only part of the bioload that produces ammonia so their bioload is significantly smaller and that's why BB is present in shrimp tanks

Okay but I just added 5 Panda Corys and 1 guppy, from my quarantine tank to my main tank, should I wait 4 weeks before I put the 10 Amano Shrimp in? I don't want ammonia spikes in my tank.

Some news, one off my frieds came to me and ask if I could take his fish because his aquarium was cracking, and he wanted to kill them if I didn't take them so I took them in my empty quarantine tank, added his small filter sponge foam, where I hope there is some good bacteria in, I took and and put it in my quarantine tank with the fish, its 1 pleco, 1 Panda Cory, 1 some other small fish,

I'm just worried about the one fish it's swimming like it's cannot keep it up right, I took video showing it

Also in this video you can see that they do eat green hair alge, skip it to : 1:36

They do it if there not any other food available, my worry is they won't eat hair algae if I feed the other fish, but maybe they will the hair algae between feeding hours where I don't feed them, what do you guys think?

I'm going to buy some new plants to put in the quarantine tank så they have some to hide in

You know something your 100% right and I am wrong.... my apologies.

I really have no idea what I am talking about because in 20 plus years of aquatics I have learned nothing, and have no personal experience.

Please go ahead and buy your Amano shrimp to clean up your algae problem, and plop them right in that uncycled tank, what the worst thing that could happen... Right...

After all it’s important to support your local fish store and economy.
