I know you guys might be tired of the question but I've never owned a female guppy before. Thanks.

Always glad to give my two cents worth. I would give her at least a week if not two and depending on if she gets stressed out or not it could be longer. Looks like you have some good hiding places for the fry with the hornswart so if you leave her in the tank some of the fry will be able to hide from the adults.

I agree, she probably has at least a week or 2 yet.

She is very beautiful by the way!

Very pretty guppy. I also agree that it'll probably be around a week before she drops. When she begins to look boxy that means she is going to start giving birth soon.

Very pretty!
Congratulations by the way, with how many times I've bought guppies male and female they have never ever bred.

HI mark, congrats on the pregnancy/birth (I think I read in another post)

Also - please try and limit your threads to one per topic -

It can get confusing keeping track of everything (well makes my old-man's brain do a double check)

I would say around a week. Make sure if you want her to drop to be careful because she will probably birth over night (experience) so if you want to stop her from eating fry move her to an empty fry tank and when you wake up transfer the mother.

I'm really wondering about my juvies (16 weeks old) and when or if they will ever give birth. It's pretty obvious that they are pregnant and have been since about week 11.

Their gravid spots are nice and dark, their belly is big enough to support at least a few small fry, yet none have given birth yet.

Today their adult mom dropped 9 new fry this morning (I'm expecting more) and she is regular as rain when it comes to giving birth, but apparently her kids didn't get the memo.

As they are guaranteed to be pregnant by my endler boys, I've been anxiously counting the days since they got pregnant.

For you more experienced fish keepers, is a longer pregnancy normal for juveniles?

I was about to ask the same thing, I've done such a good job at sexing the Endler's that now i've been trying to breed a couple, it seems like they're taking too long. The girls are were 3-4 months and virgins when they went in with Smiley just before Christmas. Their gravid spots are visible, and they're rounder. The young girls can give birth to fry without getting the box shape, which develops more as they get older and can drop more fry.

The other girls who weren't separated quickly from the boys started dropping at about 3 months.

Anyway, it is an odd situation for me :b

I'm seriously beginning to wonder about them. Mine are obviously pregnant, not squared off, but all my girls don't get that way so that's not too odd. But I do know that they began showing signs of pregnancy at 11 weeks and it's been 5 full weeks. Their mom is 28-30 days like clockwork. None of my girls have gone 5 weeks, so that just seems weird to me. Maybe it's a juvenile thing. If it were just 1 I wouldn't think too much about it, but all 4? It just seems like something I'm not understanding the process very well.

How old are your juveniles?

This is dirty tail at 12 weeks old. Pretty clear she was pregnant.

It's hilarious how they don't drop fry when we're counting the days and inspecting their bellies. They love to mess with us!

I really think that my juveniles are holding onto their offspring just to spite me. I've been waiting so long for a new endler/guppy cross that it's been driving me nuts. Today, I found out that the last batch of fry that got sent off to Jersey have a couple of boys developing some black bars and spots, so it looks like my boys have been doing their job.

I've got a fresh batch of young fry at 2 days old now that I will have to hold onto to see what comes out. I'm so excited

Quite soon as far as I can tell. I would say in the next day or two but no longer than a week for sure.

That's what I thought, thankyou. I have put them into a 60l on their own

You're going to have more babies than you know what to do with soon lol. Make sure to add some hiding places to the tank unless you want the fish to eat their babies. I recommend java moss and possibly some driftwood and/or rocks. Good luck!

Getting very close. You may notice them square off when you get within 48HRs. Sometimes it's very noticeable, sometimes not. If you move them they might drop in an hour. I usually try to move them when I think they are about 5 days away for less chance of triggering premature birthing which live-bearers are prone to do.

Ah I have lots of stones, plants and moss on the bottom these just seem to be swimming at the top. I also have floating plants so I'm hopeful that they won't eat them. Oh and there are 3 molly babies in their aswell, less than a week old and they seem to be able to hide. Thankyou

Onthefry..where do I need to move them? They are in a set up on their own apart from 3 baby (less that a week old) mollies

I misunderstood you. You don't need to move them unless they are in a tank with fish likely to prey on all the fry. It also depends on how many fry you care to save. I have separate small tanks I use for nurseries for my expensive strains. Some floating weeds like hornwort and guppy grass make it a lot simpler to protect fry.

No just the two them and the three babies in a 60l. I did have guppy grass however I've just rehomed my goldfish which were in with the tropical fish for eating it all along with various other plants. I have some floating plants in there but have no idea what it is. Do you have any idea on the number of fry they are likely to have or does it differ depending on age? I have had them 3 and a half weeks and I'm almost sure they were pregnant then. I bought them from a pet shop but have no idea on the age of them. Thankyou

Oh and one other question. Does anyone know how to avoid them being sucked into the filter?

Sponge cover over the HOB inlet tube. I just use sponge filters in my fry and maternity tanks for this reason.

you can use a sponge prefilter.

Ok I'll have a look at what I can get. The tank has an elite stingray

I have a prefilter sponge in my tank to protect my RCS fry. You can see it in this pic. The sponges are white on the left.
