How Long To Leave Tank Lights On

    How long do you leave tank lights on? When should you turn them off? leave mine on for 10-12 hours for the Amazon plants that I have but am seeing my decorations and gravel getting discolored. Only have the tank set up for 3 months, fully cycled. I also have a sponge filter that a friend gave me to keep my cycled tank seeded. Could that also be a problem with algae? It is a 20 gallon tank with 3 platys, a Top Fin filter, large airstone, live and artificial plants.

    Mine average 8 to 10 hours on.

    One aquarium is live plants, the other artificial, they both are lit up no more than 10 hours per day

    Mine are on 12-14. Diatoms are common on new tanks. Is it brownish or green algae?

    What I do is use a timer have the light come on for 3 hrs off for 3 and back on for 4. Plants grow in this time frame but not algae.

    I leave my light on 8-10 hrs and get algae. If it does become a problem, your tank can fit lots more and many inverts can help clean it up.
