How Long Does It Take For A Koi To Get Used To You?

Hi, I purchased 8 koi from my lfs about a week ago and they are shy and really skittish. They also just hang at the bottom of my pond and don't come up to get the food. When I walk over to them they just hide underneath the rocks. They are in a 800 gallon pond and they are about 4 inches long. Is there anything I can do to make them less skittish and shy?

 

Give em some time!! When I put my goldfish out in an outdoor pond it took probably 2 months into they were comfortable to come up to the surface and eat in front of me.. I always feed them at the same spot so they learn quickly that a tap on the side of the pond and a splash in the water means food!!!

Ok thanks. When I throw food in there, I don't see them eat it, but when I come back like 20 minutes later it is all gone. I guess they are eating it.

If you can hand feed the koi ,I did this in my pond and my fish instanly know who I am

 

I would maybe try hang out beside the pond a bit more, perhaps they still see you as a big scary threat. Witholding food for a few days may help them to come to the surface more quickly when food reappears. Once one gets the confidence, the rest should follow.
