How important is time using a freshwater master test kit ?

Recently got a API freshwater master test kit. Testing nitrite the color is lite purple (.50 ppm) at 5 minutes, at 10 minutes its 0.25 ppm and at 15 minutes its lite green 0 ppm. Is it set in stone to use the 5 minute color ?

Yes 5 minutes. After that the color diminishes and eventually reaches 0.

Thats weird I have the same kit but my color never diminishes.
