How Do You Frag Corals?

Hey all,

I was wondering.

How do you corals?

Do you need special equipment (frag rack)?

Do you need a separate tank?

What type of corals are best for "Begginers" to frag??

What additives need to be added to the tank water?

Where could I buy frag plugs or frag "cement" (If there is such thing?)????

I don't have sw tank but I do know you can buy frag plugs and stuff at I get the free catalogue and they are in there. Could be glue to or at least explain what to use...good luck.

 

What are you wanting to frag? They're all pretty different. For SPS, you can just break off a piece, and glue it ot a new plug or rock. You want to use a gel superglue with cyanoacrylate as the active ingredient. Make sure you cover the entire bottom of the new frag so the coral does not get infected.

For LPS, you can just break off a branch and do the same thing, make sure the bottom of the new frag is covered.

For softies, I just try to break off a part of the rock that it's on with a hammer and chisel. You can also scrape it off the rock and glue it to the new rock or plug. Make sure to dry the bottom of the coral with a towel before applying the new glue to a softie, so it will stick.

Monti-caps are very good first coral to frag. Just use super glue gel and glue your frags to ceramic disks. I also have a DIY frag rack somewhere in the Saltwater section.

 

I agree with montipora for sps, c. furcata (candy cane) for lps and xenia for soft corals, and button polyps. There are many that are easy to frag, but maybe not so easy to grow (growth rates, water, feeding, etc). For hard corals if it is a clean break or cut I try to use super glue and if it's an irregular shape I use the epoxy. The epoxy works well, just kinda sticky because with the kind I use you have to activate it by beading it with your fingers for a minute or two and then you can affix the coral to the epoxy and then the epoxy to the rock work or frag plug.

Calfo's book gets pretty specific with how to frag details and is an excellent read.
