Welcome to FishLore!

If your tank is small, like say 10 gallons, you can get a siphon for around $5.00 at WalMart, and empty the dirty water into a bucket at the other end of the hose. If your tank is larger, like 55 gallons or more, I would suggest using a python, which hooks up to a faucet and you don't have to worry about overfilling the bucket.

Yup And while vacuuming, you can poke the gravel with the gravel vac. tube so that you siphon out all the trapped fish waste. This helps a great deal in keeping the water clean. If you simply siphon the water but not the fish wastes, the fish wastes will continue to decopose on and under your gravel causing your water quality to disintegrate faster.

I use the vacuum for the 29 gallon and the 55 gallon tanks and there is a method to using them. But for the ten gal, after I bought the smallest vacuum for that size I found that it just doesn't work. As Flbettacouple does, which is a great idea and one that I am going to incorporate into my maintenance is using a turkey baster to pick up the debris that is left over on the bottom.

Another helpful hint, just vacuum 1/2 the tank at a time. Your fish will have room to get away from you and it causes less stress. If you get on a cycle of vacuuming and changing water 1/2 one week, and 25%, then do the other side next week, it works well. Pick up decorations, and clean under them also as Toxic gas tends to get trapped under them.

I am sure Dave is the only one who would want a copyright on a turkey baster!!! I much rather something that would go a bit faster.

Just filled my 125 gal today! It is SO great to have a good sized tank FINALLY! I wouldn't want to clean it with a turkey baster. :-\

LOL.. but look how many sell each year.. not that we need the money, owning the internet and all.. :;a

Yea, we'll have to get a python now that we've gotten a tank bigger than 10g.
