How Do I Reproduce Marimo Moss Balls?

I read that you rip it in half and just leave it there. Idk if that's accurate or not?

Rip it apart and leave it.

Marimo moss is actually a type of algae, so there's not really a central point of the plant. Each cell is it's own thing, and they build upon eachother until you see strands, and those strands make moss balls.

So yeah, you're not hurting anything by ripping it apart. Just keep in mind that it takes a while to grow!

I ripped mine into six pieces, and now I have six healthy moss balls.

I also would like to add that moss ball algae grows very slowly, and can take many years to become as big as a softball. I have had my moss ball for over three years, and it’s the size of a golf ball.
