How Do I Get Rid Or Control My Algae?

Hey guys.

I'm having a bit of an algae problem in my 5.6 fluval spec tank. It has 2 anubias plants, fake rocks, and a fake wood decoration. My betta fish is the only inhabitant of the tank right now. I also have some root tabs in it for the plants.

I have been getting a lot of string algae on the plants and the decorations. I'm also getting a bit of algae on the glass near the bottom of the tank. The algae on the glass I don't mind, but the string algae is really annoying and stubborn. What are your suggestions in controlling string algae?

I actually took apart the aquarium today and scrubbed everything to get rid of the string algae because it was getting out of control. It has only been a couple hours since then and I can already see it coming back.

How long do you leave the lights on for?

Try using a product called "Algae Be Gone", that's what I use and it works like a charm!

Second the nerite. And do you have more room for plants? Water column feeders? They compete with the algae.

I also had an algae problem in my 55 for a while. Though not hair algae, I put 4 nerites in and haven’t seen a spec of algae since.

My tanks have the lights on for 15-16.5 hours. No algae!

Live plants and nerite snails. Better to add one or 2, than 4-5. It may take longer but they won’t starve once the algae is gone.

Yea the nerite snails should help with algae, I thought Betta fish could sometimes take a liking to the snails and eat them though?

You can try using NualgI Aquarium if you can buy it in your area. I used NualgI Ponds from the same company and my ponds are having no algae problem throughout the year. This is not a chemical and it is a kind of deep sea algae that works under very weak light. It competes with other algae by started chewing up all the nutrient in the very early morning when the light is still very weak and thus starving out the rest of the algae.

Heya. I got a really bad algae bloom that was resistant to water changes, gravel cleaning, 3 day blackout and reduced feeding. Since my water peramaters were good My LFS suggested we get a UV Steriliser. I have an 87L tank so we got the recommended FRF Green Killing Machine. 5 days later our tank was completely clear. We did a large water change and a really thorough gravel siphon and have not had to use the uv steriliser since. Best money I have ever spent!

I've had to deal with bad algae bloom and no matter what I did it got worse...it was so bad that some of my plants were dying. well, I removed the dead plants and and dying leaves/stems from my cryptocoryne, removed my betta, removed the filter and did the Hydrogen Peroxide dose. basically poured 2-3 capfulls of Hydrogen Peroxide and used a power head to move the mixture around the tank. After 20 mins, I did a 95% water change and made sure to vacuum the gravel....I also make sure the kids turn off the light when they get home from school. It's been two weeks since the dosing and it appears to have worked.
