I have a one year old bluetick hound. I have recently moved into a new condo witch he was raised in a apartment. every time I leave weather its for five minuets or for five hours he non stop bays. I have got three noise complaints and will soon have to move or find him a new home. I love him so so much and really do not want to get rid of him. he was raised in a condo and always was decently quit since my ex and I broke up ( this was his dog) he can't even be with my mom with out freaking out when I leave. WHAT DO I DO !?!?!?! I have tried a bark collar he doesn't care. my next thing is a muzzle every time he bays I put it on him and when he doesn't I take it off and maybe water training him ? he is a really good dog and smart. I have not taken him to any obedience classes but he does know how to sit lay down shake a paw high five and a bunch of things. He is also well socialized and has a doggy brother. I need to figure out what to do. please help me?

Welcome to Fishlore.

Coonhounds bay when they are excited or unhappy. Since you leaving him is triggering the baying, he is probably experiencing separation anxiety. You can help him get through this with the help of a veterinarian and a trainer who will evaluate the seriousness of his symptoms and recommend training and possibly medication.

Don't put off getting help. This isn't going to go away by itself.

Probably shouldn't have gotten a hound if you're living in Apartments lol that's why it's important to do research on a breed before purchasing it. Hounds are loud, period. Doesn't even always mean there is something wrong. They're loud when they're happy, sad, excited, scared, etc. Good luck!

I would think a muzzle would create a lot more anxiety for an already anxious dog, and I personally would never leave a dog muzzled. They have something called thunder shirts which is like a Tshirt for dogs that is supposed to help with anxiety. However I think you are fighting a loosing battle with a hound that is bred to bay and hunt, and trying to keep them in an apartment. They need room to run , lots of exercise which is very hard to do on a daily basis with out a lot of land, and the commitment to play with them for several hours per day or do agility training ect. I know it is a tough decision, but sometimes what is best for the animal is not what is best for us. Good luck on what ever you decide. Alison

Move to a place that has a fenced in backyard. If he's constantly copped up then that would explain the anxiety.

Something that has worked for us in the past while fostering louder breeds had been leaving the telly on with animal planet or natgeo with lots of animal sounds. But its definitely separation anxiety coupled with it being a hound breed.
