i got potting soil substrate with my friend and told him i needed some sort of sifting tool for the soil. but i couldnt remember the purpose other than sifting out sticks and what not. his reasoning made sense out of water but i couldnt remember the reason why isnt wasnt any good in water so i was whatever. today i remembered why. Tanins at least one of them. i already took care of the ammonia issue i think.

so um... how does one deal with tanins that are in the tank already. i cant sift through the substrate now that its been capped with sand. that would just ruin everything. do i just wait it out through water changes?

Have you tried carbon?

Wait it out and just keep testing your parameters. Ammonia, Nitrite, nitrate, and PH. Also some carbon as stated above or i think Purigen will also help with tannins. Tannins are good for fish so don't worry if it takes a while for them to clear out.

My out of the gate question is why would you ever want rid of tannins. Barring an extreme case I work to ADD tannins to my tanks using Indian almond leaves and the like. Unless your water is egregiously brown embrace the tannins!
