I'm always seeing people on youtube with crystal clear water but all they say to do is have proper filtration, use carbon, use seachem clarity, but no says how to start and keep the water looking clear, How do you guys keep your aquarium water clear as glass , and how can I get rid of free floating white dots in my aquarium water they seem to never disappear the white small dots are always floating everywhere in my tank even after 2-3 days they are still floating in the tank, how do people have clear water without small white dots/ bubbles in their tank

I don't do anything my water is just crystal clear. Besides the algae on glass. I don't use any chemical filtration besides the carbon in one of my hob cartridges. Idk what white things you say are but I don't have it. I do over filter.

My tank is crystal clear once the water has settles after stirring the sand my tank is close on the filtration. I have a 30 gal filter for a 29 gal tank I use carbon, bio rings and sponge filter...

Eric, I don't believe you will ever have crystal clear water with goldfish, they are too dirty. You can try adding a polishing pad to your filters if you have some extra room for media. If you dont, leave the current media in place since you just went through a minI cycle.

I use pillow batting in my canister. Basically it's a "water polisher" it just filters smaller partials that the other filter media misses and it works great. I agree with Rivieraneo, try a polishing pad that fits in your filters just change it every month or two depending how dirty it gets.

Hi, first off your parameters need to be in good shape. If you have nitrites or ammonia, you have the potential for bacterial blooms. Another trick is to "polish" the water --- use filter floss or some generic version thereof. I use quilt matting --- very inexpensive, but you have to change it out typically at least a couple of times a week.

HI Eric, go to fabric/craft department. It is the stuff you stuff pillows with and it works fine-just have to change it out often-a couple times a week in an HOB and at least 3 or so weeks in a canister. I quit using it in canisters and just use other media like the nitrate absorbing pads, etc.

Good morning,

If you have particles floating to the surface, perhaps a Fresh Water Surface Skimmer would work for you. I use these in my prefiltering drum and tank that I use to prefilter my water for water changes, before it goes into my display tank. I highly recommend this product:

You can also use a Micron Filter Pad, cut to fit, in the link below:

Why Filter Floss & Micron Pads? Explained

Activated Carbon:
My two cents on activated carbon: I'm a firm believer that every freshwater aquarium should use it. Granted it is a personal choice and many members only use it at certain times, if they use it all. I respect that and it's their decision.

I use it around the clock in all of my tanks, changing it out every 3 weeks. I don't feel that carbon masks any problems but removes them as long as you change it out periodically. I change mine every 3 weeks for fresh. It absorbs minerals and organic substances, helps to keep your water clear, eliminates foul odors. It will also remove medications and discoloration in the water (caused by driftwood for an example). If you're running more than 1 filter on a tank, the carbon does not have to go into every filter only 1. The other filters you can stuff full of good bio media. (sponges, ceramic cubes and tubes, bio balls).

I've stopped saying that the Activated Carbon (AC) leaches what it has collected back into the tank. There are people on both sides of the fence here. Instead I think it's more accurate to say the the AC looses it effectiveness after 3 to 4 weeks and it should be removed and replaced.

It has been my experience that Activated Carbon will not remove a bacterial bloom.

If your tank smells foul then I highly recommend adding it to your filter immediately. A water change would probably be a good idea too.

Purigen will make your water so clear that you will think your fish are flying through air. It acts similar to activated carbon but removes many other things. If having crystal clear water is a priority to you, you will love the stuff.
