How did bladder snail get in the tank?

Last night I saw a bladder snail in my tank!!!

How he got in the main tank is my question... cause I put my only egg-infected plant in my QT tank... no snails there?

He was so cute!! I tried to get him in a cup to put him in the QT and he decided to go into the gravel... I hope the loaches didn't eat him

They might! Chances are there are more than 1 too.

Maybe it's a good thing if the loaches eat them... lol. Don't want an infestation if I can help it.

If I find them, I'm going to put them in my QT tank. Seeing as I'm hoping to upgrade soon, it can be my snail tank.

Oh bladder snails are cute, but I consider them the atomic snail of the snail world. I have come to the conclusion that when we are finally stupid enough to blow up this miracle of a planet we have been gifted with, the only things that will survive are rats, cockroaches and bladder snails.

Don't get me wrong, I actually love snails, have 4 varieties and 3 of those are cherished pets. But I'm in an all out war with the bladder snails and they are totally whooping my hind end. This is coming from a crazy lady who adores creepy crawlies.

Oh well, if they do get populating your tank, at least you have free loach food, lol.

I found him a bit ago lol, put him in my QT tank!

He has since had babies... I don't want an overpopulation so I think once the babies get bigger I'll take them down to my local river and release them... they already have bladder and pond snails there.

Until then, I've nicknamed the big one Mr. Snail-Man

Please DO NOT release these snails into the environment. They can easily take over and crash any existing snail populations. I know you saidthey already live near you, but the species you introduce may have disease etc that can harm natural populations. Not to mention that this is illegal to release pets into the wild in many states.

What do I do with them then? I refuse to kill them.

See if your lfs will take them? Start a snail jar or container.

You could also try the BSTF section on this forum or craigslist, ebay, etc. The easiest way to get rid of them is to just crush the shells IMO, instantly kills them and they do not suffer. You could also freeze them. I don’t like killing them either but it’s necessary to stop them from becoming invasive to natural populations. Think about it, if you released them instead of killing them those released snails could outcompete many others for food, causing other deaths down the line anyways.

Give some to your loaches. I know my dwarf chain loaches would looove a supply of escargot!

I'm sorry, but this an ignorant statement.

Releasing any, ANY, type of domesticated animal, even just a snail, is completely irresponsible. Most of the aquarium plants are so invasive to local waters that they are banned in some states. And that's just plants. Culling is a necessary evil. If you keep live plants, you're likely to get snails. You need to have a better plan for them.

Ok... I'll contact them.

I'll try but I can't ship.

Ok... I just physically cannot kill them, my mind completely doesn't allow me. It's some kind of thing related to my autism. I'm incapable of it.

When I try I have anxiety/panic attacks and shut down. Just can't.

Snails are not bad. The number will explode for a month or 2 and you will be thinking about anything to get rid of them. The one day they are gone and much less noticable

Not sure if kuhli loaches eat them as I’ve never kept them.

Culling isn't always killing, my dear. I understand not wanting to end the tiny snail. But it's your responsibility to do something, other than release it. Perhaps a separate tank just for snails, or there are several fish options that snack on snails, even assassin snails eat pest snails. Or make peace with them, and let them live.

Do assassin snails reproduce like crazy?

I want to leave them be... but my mom doesn't. She knows that they are hermaphroditic and cause infestation, so she doesn't want them.

They are great at algea removal. They do explode in population but they die off as the algea and food is lowered. I hated them now I actually enjoy them. You can get assassin's but if you have alot of other snails they can reproduce unless I only have 1 assassin snail.

You can also gift them to people who have loaches/puffers as pets. These fishes love snacking on snails. Depends on whether you know such people though. That's how I keep my ramshorn snail population in check.

I bought assassin snails to control pest snails. Then the assassins became pests. I give my excess assassins to my LFS.

I like my Ramshorn snails and am currently trying to recover that population from being devastated by the assassins. I do not like the pond or bladder snails as much, but I have them too.

I agree with those who say not to release anything into the environment. Doing so causes major environmental problems. And these environmental problems kill many species of plants and animals. That is why it is illegal to do so.

I wanted to create a local species tank by harvesting some plants fish and sand from a nearby pond. I was told that once I took those things out of the pond and kept them in a tank, I could not release them back into the pond when they out grew my tank. I am not sure why. I guess they might pick up some disease or parasite in my tank and then infect the pond.

Humans have devastated natural eco-systems by introducing invasive species. We have to take great care. Even boats going from one body of water to another can carry problems.

Finding balance is a part of fishkeeping. Lots of balances to manage in keeping fish. Pest snails, algae, food, assassin snails can be managed to find balance. In doing so you learn about their needs. Mine are not in balance yet. I am still learning.

If you have anything that will breed, you will have to make peace with some means of population management. Food control, euthanasia, giving, predators, etc. I have guppies breeding. I gave some to my LFS for their feeder tank. I felt bad about that. I gave another batch to a friend. I felt better about that. I offered my assassins to my friend, he did not want them.

If you put pest snails in your QT tank and you quarantine plants. Then you will probably bring pests back to your main tank when you bring the plants to the main tank. Some people treat plants before putting them in aquariums to remove any snails or snail eggs.

Pest snails are common on plants.

I had two baby bladder snails (I think) in my tank, I’m sure from one of the plants I purchased online or my lfs. My 2 green platinum barbs (my bullies) took care of them, poor things never had a chance. This started my interest in keeping snails. I have two nerites now who they don’t bother with, but they tend to poke at my Japanese Trapdoor if he stops to rest from his never ending cleaning work. So basically, get yourself some bully barbs lol didn’t realize how jerky they could be! I ended up adding 3 green tiger barbs to see if that would calm their aggression - it seemed to have worked for now, they all school together.

Yep. Between my loaches (in 2 tanks) and my tiger barbs. I’ll never have a snail problem lol!
I currently have only ramshorns in my quarantine tank. I had some tiger barb pecking order reorganization going on so put two into the quarantine. The next day, all the tiny ramshorns were gone. Oops.

I could never smash my snail either.I have anxiety issues and it would truly upset me and give me bad dreams..And yes...I am one of those super duper sensitive ppl...I truly do wish you luck..Big or not, they are still peaceful creatures. But putting them into outside rivers or ponds would not be a good idea as they are considered invasive....
