I am quite new to owning Betta fish and I have no idea to how dense an aquarium should be with decor and plants. About how much open space should I have in my aquarium?

you want enough space for the betta to move around so one hide out with a few plants will be fine, you don't want it overlly crowded because the fish won't have much space to move

If you can, do only plants(live if possible) and fill in the entire back of the tank to give the front of the tank some free space for the betta to swim. 3.5 is kinda small to overcrowd with decoration so yeah, I would only do plants.

Thanks! But I heard Betta fish need some kind of hide just in case they are afraid. I have a decently sized log I can place in the back of the aquarium.

Mine loves swimming in and out of tons of plants, he doesn't like to swim for long, and since he loves the plants so much I'm aiming for more of a jungle look. They'll appreciate any sort of floating plant that lets them rest near the surface, like a bunch of anacharis.
