Hi jestermac, welcome to fishlore

If you haven't already, I suggest reading up on the Nitrogen Cycle (https://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm)

What you are experiencing is normal, and water changes along with prime will help greatly.

Are you cycling with fish or without? There is some great advice/information in the Nitrogen Cycle page about cycling with both methods.

Also, if you could post some readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, we'll be able to help you a lot better.

During the cycling process, you can expect to be doing a LOT of water changes and testing. Prime is great (from what I hear) for detoxifying the nitrogen forms and keeping the water safe for the fish. Keep in mind that ANY nitrite is toxic to the fish so continue to do your partial water changes to keep your levels as close to zero as possible. Good luck
