Some sites say 2", some say 4", some say something in between...grrrrrr. Is there anyone who keeps X. variatus who can give me an exact number?

A lot depends on the genetics of the fish.
Another major factor is the conditions in which the fish is kept.
Also, the way the fish are harvested at the farms, leads to smaller fish being sold in the stores.
I have 2 year old adults here that range form 2-3 inches.

Ok thanks. Are they basically the same as X. maculatus in their behavior, breeding, and feeding?

Oh and forgot to ask, is there a size difference between males and females like there is in X. maculatus?

Yes.

If you can keep 2 females to each male, things will go a lot smoother.

Thanks, just one more question...do variatus have the same fry-eating tendency as maculatus do?

Most of the swords do.
I have to watch mine like a hawk, even with a lot of plants in the tank, to keep the adults from eatting the babies.
