basically, ammonia burns the fish's gills, fins, and body.

nitrite causes methemoglobinemia, prevents the hemoglobin from transporting oxygen to all the parts of the body, basically suffocates from the inside.

Explain to them that cycling a tank simply means allowing ammonia and nitrite eating bacteria to grow. Both ammonia and nitrites are toxic to fish. Once a tank is fully cycled the bacteria will remove both.

If there are fish in the tank the fish produce ammonia. Ammonia eating bacteria produces nitrites. If there are no fish in the tank you will have to provide an alternate ammonia source. No ammonia=no bacteria=no cycle
