Horse pregnancy?

My friend has a American Saddlebred (I think) and she turned 3 in March and they have a stallion that they separated only 2 weeks ago and he dropped last June and she looks to be pregnant her belly is a very odd shape and another mare of there's had a baby 5 weeks ago and she had the same shape belly so could she be pregnant or just fat? No vet either cause they are running tight on money.

Safest bet is she's pregnant! Put a male and a female together and you're almost guaranteed to have babies.

What did you mean by "he dropped last June"? Has he been in with the mares from last June until just 2 weeks ago?

I agree with Aquaphobia an oddly shaped belly on a mare could mean she's pregnant. However if by dropped you mean born (which is what the term 'dropped' usually means in the horse world) then the stallion (colt) who was dropped last June couldn't be the sire. The gestation period in horses is 11 months which means the stallion/colt would have bred her the same month he was born and it takes about a year for a colt to be fertile. If he just bred her she wouldn't be showing yet and you wouldn't get a foal till next April. She maybe pregnant but right now I'd say she's just fat.

Duh, I feel silly now When I read "stallion" I pictured an adult, in which case the word "dropped" means something entirely different in the horse world;D

You could still be right because if the 'stallion' was foaled (dropped) last June then he'd technically still be a 'colt'. However the term 'dropped' could also be used referring to his testicles, which in this case if they 'dropped' last June he could be the dad. Testicles usually drop sometime birth and 6 months.

I'm sorry I got no emails so I didn't know there was a reply. My friend said dropped as in he got testicles and also I forgot to mention he is three. I talked to them about it and they refuse to admit that she is pregnant and they said if she was he wouldn't be the father. But not bashing them they don't really know how to tell if a mare is pregnant just last month another mare gave birth to a dead foal and they didn't know she was pregnant through any of it! (The foal died because of medicine they have to give the mare)

A 3 year old stallion is fully capable of siring foals.

Sounds responsible. Seems to me if they are tight on funds at the very least they should be doing what they can to prevent creating more horses. But that's just me.

If the mare is pregnant (from what you describe I would bet she is) i'd start checking for her udder to swell. My guess is that she will foal in the next month or two.
The easiest way to prevent pregnancy in horses is to get the colt gelded. In some areas of the country they have low cost gelding clinics. Besides most stallions are not much fun to have around.

Wow I totally forgot about this post I will check her next time we go but going over there is far and few in between.

Actually there stallion is really gentle and sweet he doesn't hurt me at all. But I think that's very low on there priority list because one kid has cancer and there house needs work so I think the last thing they are spending Money on is horses.

Did they finally accept that the mare's pregnant? When's her due date?
