I was in Petco today picking up a few things for the new tank and noticed a group of gentleman with clipboards in hand. I was being helped by the "aquatic specialist" when he was called over to talk to one of the stern clipboard gents. He opened one of the filter cabinets and pulled out a rather large filter just covered in sludge. He asked the aquatic specialist how long it had been since they were cleaned out and he replied "well it looks like its been awhile" The pens went to work jotting down notes and when he was done he looked up and said, " How well do you suppose your filters are working? these are supposed to be cleaned at least once a week" Fumbling the aquatic specialist went on to b lame "Mark" the Sunday night guy. (NICE!)
The aquatic specialist was then asked if he was a service contractor for Marineland Filters and the specialist replied "Yes", to which the clipboard asked...."IS this how Marineland taught him??" (BAHAHAHAHAH) The clipboard crew then decided to remove themselves from the sales floor. I watched with glee as the parade of clipboards went by.
I have been so sickened by the fish they keep, I hardly go there anymore so this was great to see that someone at Petco actually cares about these things. Even if his goal was profit, the fish could ultimately be helped. I could almost here them cheering when I left. Hmm....I will keep an eye on the classified, maybe an "aquatic specialist" position will be available. I would apply if Shawnie, Ken, Carol, Lucy, and SDS come out to oversee the project. LOL

I've had nothing but bad luck with petco, every other fish I've gotton from there dies. I've only started my fish tanks last november, so I have many questions and they never answers. Most of the time by thier reaction to my question I can tell that I all ready know more about the question then they do.

Before I got a master test kit, I went there to get my water tested, I watched them test my water with the same test strips that I had at home.

I think I'm just going to stick to the mom & pop shops now. They always have atless 1 person that knows what they are talking about...... and thank God I found this forum!

Wow, that's great!
Hopefully corporate offices have been listening to e-mails and phone calls from fish keepers like you (and us) who are disgusted with the way alot of places tend to their fish.

That's good to hear they are starting to crack down on the large chain stores. I'd personally like to see my local Petsmart actually care about the livestock the carry. Not just the fish, but all the little critters.

UPDATE!
Well, my wife an I stopped in the store a little over a month ago and tried to order some stand from our "aquatic specialist" friend. He said the stands would be in 2-4 weeks. Well...long story our friend showed a complete lack of enthusiasm for me and to be honest I am not sure the tanks were ever even ordered. After 5 calls and stopping in to see when the tank stands might arrive , 6 weeks later I decided to cancel my order based on his attitude. I called the manager to let him know why I was canceling, but he refered me to a number that didnt exist for his district manager. I guess the manager didnt want to deal with him either. So I went to their website and wrote a letter there. I really dont know what I expect from it as I have no intention of buying anything from them again and I have already built my own stands. (The wife said it couldnt be done but I proved her wrong! Thats another thread though.)
The district manager called me today and left a message that she would be out until Sunday but she would love to speak with me regarding my experience. I will call her back and explain just because its the right thing to do. At least I got a call back!
