Homicidal mystery snail

kylequat

I just wanted to open a thread for people to share their experiences with violent mystery snails. I joined this forum to post my experience, but the thread was closed, so here it is.
A while back, I added two golden mystery snails to my 10 gallon community tank. I noticed that they were mounting each other pretty frequently, and that they would occasionally bite each other. Once while they were mounted, the bottom snail climbed onto the wall, and the force of the filter current partially pulled it out of its shell. A short while later, the snail that hadn't been pulled out was dead. I had no idea why, until today when I tried to add a nerite snail to the community tank. The surviving, damaged mystery snail immediately chased the nerite down, mounted it, and started trying to eat it. I moved the nerite to my betta tank as soon as I noticed, but the mystery had already chipped off part of its shell. Im kind of upset because that was a brand new red racerback nerite, who was a bit pricier than my zebra. Im starting to think that this mystery snail killed its counterpart and is still out for blood, maybe as revenge for being pulled out of its shell? Keeping my nerites in a separate tank until the mystery passes.

I have seen my mystery mess with my nerites but it is pretty rare. Usually just passing over it because in the way! But yeah, no reason why a snail wouldn't turn violent on occasion.

Here are a couple more pictures of the rude golden mystery and the poor red racer nerite victim.

Male mystery snails are very excited and will try to mount anything sometimes. It was probably a mating gone wrong.
