I was thinking about how to make homemade liquid fertilizer and thought can you just crush up root tabs and mix it into water? Would that work?

You can purchase pps-pro ferts from GLA. Its dry ferts, comes with a bottle, you mix your own.
I purchased their dry ferts, was $15 for 3 1lb tubs of macros and 1 1lb tub of micros. The shipping was like $12

It will be easier to just put the root tabs where the roots are. They are not designed to work in the water column. They are black sooty coal looking things.

Maybe you could with other things? But not root tabs specifically

Wouldn't you save alot of time by just buying liquid fertilizer that's designed for water column? Some plants take more in from roots, and other such as anubius and slow growers take up nutrients from water column and is why they thrive better with rhizome out of substrate.

It sounds like it would work in theory, but I’m sure other people understand the more realistic reasons why it wouldn’t. Something to do with the ingredients probably.

I used thrive C for a while until I realized it wasnt raising my nitrates and added too much phosphates to my water, both resulting in really bad Cyanobacteria. So I ordered some powdered potassium nitrate and added a cup to one gallon of water. The KNO3 raises my nitrates and adds potassium, then I just dose iron for the red plants. I have no issues just doing that, it was really cheap and I have a whole gallon of solution that raises my nitrates to 20ppm with just 5 mL. Making your own fertilizers is way better than buying premade mixes! It is cheaper in the long run and lasts forever, as well as being customizable. (Just in case you’re considering buying ferts)

Yup, I'm starting to figure this out as well. All I dose in my tanks now is K and trace. I have phosphates in my tap water and I prefer N restriction anyways. No algae problems now (knock on wood haha)
