Hobbies other than fish keeping

As far as Third Reich stuff, probably the same way i came by my collection of stuff from that era: grandfathers that fought in WWII. My grandpa had brought back several items such as a swatstika arm band and flag, also a bayonet blade. They frown a lot more at bringing home war trophies now than they did back then.

Yeah... often the case. It's hard to get my head around that.

 

Ancient roman and gaulish coins can be found here still in high numbers. An uncle of mine found 10 in a day going over a field with a metal detector.

I am by no means an expert in ancient coins, but the medieval period is my specialty. And from these random medieval coins... left column, middle: Is there a year number on that? I would think about getting that one checked again. Numbers of years did not occur on coins before the modern period. I can read "162x". That would fit.

Also, collecting Third Reich stuff is thankfully (!) illegal in Germany. How does one come to collect that?

Ya know, you are correct. It's either 1623 or 1625. I know the large left coin is a Michael IV Byzantine era coin, so 1034-1041AD. The smaller cut coins were actually thrown in with the Byzantine coin when I bought it. I know a couple are marked Hispanola, but honestly, it's been a minute since I actually sat down and examined them. Thank you for pointing that out. I'm going to see what I find out about them because honestly, I forget.

As far as Third Reich era coins, it's more of my fascination with the aviation and other technological achievements of that era and the brave men and women on all sides during a very dark period of history. Things changed a lot during WW2 and unspeakable things happened, but it happened nonetheless. This fascination carried over to coins. Mind you, this is not just limited to Third Reich only memorabilia, as I only have the 5 reichsfennig coin that bares the Swastika and is a product of the Third Reich. I also have coins from that era from the Soviet Union, Hungary, France, Italy, England, USA and many more. I just took a picture of that coin for an example as it is easily more recognizable to the average person than a 1943 French franc or Hungarian forint.

Yeah.. WWII was maybe the single greatest period in the history of aviatiin as far as technological breakthroughs.

And, in my opinion, some the most aesthetically pleasing designs. From the graceful, sleek lines of a P-51D to the rugged good looks of a Bf-109, the manliness of a B-17 and the simplicity of the Soviet Illyushins to the ungodly hideous, yet intriguing designs of the first generation jets. In just a few short years we went from holdover biplanes from WW1 to the jet age. Crazy!

Really i have turned crazy like that. Can't hardly get me to go into a lake, river, creek or swimming pool but i will go run like a madman straight into the ocean with sharks and jellyfish n whatnot without hesitation

My husband would call that irrational fear. I have a fear of bugs, because they can go places they don’t belong. But, I’ve never actually had that happen to me. I’ve just seen it on TV/internet.

As it's already too late in the evening to actually write a meaningful answer, but I'll put it this way: I have had bad experiences with collectors specialized in WWII period german memorabilia and I'm glad you completely wiped away my concerns. Oh most definitely. Do not worry, I'm not one of THOSE guys. I know the ones you speak of with Swastika and four particular numbers tattooed on their bodies. I have Confederate currency as well (somewhere), but I don't swing that way either. But yes, I'd love to discuss coins or fish or whatever with you anytime.

One of the most interesting guys I ever met used to work for my dad, who was the fire chief at the local Air Force base. This guy was a private in the German army late in WWII. He was conscripted at age 15, given about a week of training, handed a rifle and told to stand guard at a post in Berlin.

So here comes the Russian Army, and they are kind of upset. He and his buddy bailed out, and ran seven miles through a bombed out Berlin in order find an American unit so they could surrender, which they did.

Now, I was about 15 years old when he related this story to me, and that kind of blew my mind. It really opened up some perspective whenever I started getting sad about how "hard" I had it.

 

I heavily disagree. Brady is the most overrated player of all time. And I think you're going to see that even more this year. He hardly owns any QB records. Most of them are split between Drew Brees and Brett Favre. Then there's a sprinkling of Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers and old legends. Then there's Brady sitting on a couple. Most of his records and achievements are related to age and his team, such as postseason records. Brady has been lucky enough to have one of the greatest coaches of all time and one of the greatest systems of all time. He's an incredibly smart QB, but not overly talented. The throws he makes are usually not that impressive. Most of the time he's checking down to RBs and slot recievers. He's also not very mobile.

Personally I think if you want to define the greatest it's talent. The quarterback is not the whole team. Wins take a team, the postseason takes a team, the super bowl takes a team. But if you're talented that shows regardless. You can elevate your team far past where they should be. To me that knocks Brady out of the conversation. I think you're looking at either Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, or Aaron Rodgers. Of those 3 Aaron Rodgers is regarded as the greatest thrower of the football we've ever seen. Not even close. The closest we have is Pat Mahomes and he's only been around a short while, he has a long ways to go to see if he's consistent in the long run. At this point he's basically discount Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers very well could break 400 TDs with less than 100 INTs this year. And at the rate he's going very well could break 500 TDs with less than 100 INTs. He's sitting at a 4.33 TD/Int ratio. He does things with the ball nobody else can. I could straight up write you an essay on all this, complete with video links and arguments for why any of Brees, Manning, and Rodgers is the greatest instead of Brady. They're all just flat out better.

Yeah....Ive been an avid show attender for since I was 18; it kills not to have seen a single show since Dec.

 

I've got an uber nerdy hobby: Coin collecting! I'm particularly fascinated with ancient Roman and Greek, medieval European and coins from the Third Reich. I have +/- around 500 coins from just about every era and location. Nothing over the top like a 1787 Ephraim Brasher gold doubloon. Mostly more modest coins with few exceeding $50/ea. Here are few of my favorites, albeit not exactly my most valuable:

A few ancient Greek and Roman coins. The three little ones in the middle are roughly from around 450BC, making them close to 2,500 years old and my oldest coins.

The copper coin at the bottom an 1808 East India Company Ten Cash which was recovered from the 1809 Admiral Gardner shipwreck. It spent 176 years at the bottom the English channel off the coast of Dover before being discovered by a fishing trawler. It was amazingly well preserved due to being sealed in wax coated wooden casks.

Having preschoolers means I'm not really allowed hobbies but back when I was allowed to be an actual person I liked

I have a G27 pistol. I have it for protection purposes only. I tried stippling or modify it but not successful though. I've read on how to do it correctly here https://www.gungods.net/how-to-stipple-your-handgun-grip-a-diy-guide/ and probably try it again soon.

Time and money are finite resources and since getting back into fish keeping a few years ago I’ve spent less time on my other hobbies. I enjoy gardening as my main recreational activity. I also have an interest in wrist watches and small pocket knives and have a small collection of each. Below is what I’m wearing/carrying today.
