HI all,
I am getting a marineland penguin 150 bio wheel for my 20L shell dweller tank, what would be a nice cheap media that I wouldn’t have to replace and offers good mechanical filtration?

Mechanical filtration and biological are two different things. I don’t think there is one filter that does it.

If you want a cheap filter just buy a aquaclear sponge, cut it to size and stuff it in there. That would be the biological.

For mechanical you could buy some filter floss and use that as your mechanical.

How would a much more fine sponge work for mechanical, I wouldn’t have to replace it right?

Probably more often than you'd like.

you could use a piece of course sponge closest to the intake mainly for mechanical filtration. and then a fine sponge or biomax ceramics behind the course sponge mainly for biological.
there will be some bacteria in the 1st sponge, just rinse and squeeze it out during water changes in a bucket of old tank water that you just siphoned or pumped out. this is how my Fluval U3 underwater filter is designed.

or you could use polyfill from Walmart for the mechanical filtration. its very cheap, like $4 for a good sized bag that'll last for a few months. or the super giant bag for $9 that'll probably last a year or more.

I have a 10-20 gallon HOB. Little space for something to maintain bb, so I bought a small media bag and put half a handful of ceramic rings in it to float. Now I can change out my flossy cartridge without crashing my cycle on my 10 gallon.

I have chunks of aquarium foam still in use after 13 years, it offers decent bacterial and mechanical filtration. If you have any messy fish (clown plecos) they do need cleaned weekly.
