Hob Filter Makes Loud Noises Occasionally?

I have been woken up in the middle of the night about 6 times this year, because my HOB will start making a very loud buzzing sound. It's almost like the noise it makes after it's been turned off and then back on, when it's trying to filter water but the water isn't flowing but I think it's coming from the propeller or whatever it is that does the initial filtration. I assume it's something getting caught there? And the only way I've been able to stop it before is by unplugging and then plugging it back in, but now even that's not working. I'm hoping it will go away with time, I don't really know what the real problem is, do any of you know what it might be or have similar experiences?

Yah I did. But the only way I could get rid of it was to buy a newer filter (it was 16 years old). But you could try taking it apart and seeing if there is something stuck. Or I did try at one point to put petroleum jelly on the bar of the impeller. That worked for a bit and it won't hurt your fish. Or it could be the hood vibrating.

Usually the cylinder that the impeller sits in, is full of gunk and prevents it from turning freely. That can cause the intake tube and or the cover to vibrate creating the noise. Once in a while you would need to get at the impeller and clean it. Good luck.

Mine is fairly old as well, I've had it for 8 or 9 years now plus however many years the previous owner had it for. I left it running while I was out today and it has stopped making the noise for now. If it does it again I'm going to check the impeller and if it still isn't the impeller I suppose I'm going to end up buying a new one.

If you buy a new one, tetra whisper ex Is the one I got and you can't even tell it's running.

The idea of a quiet filter is practically foreign to me at this point, especially since my aquarium is in my bedroom. If I end up getting a new one, I will definitely give that one a look at, thank you!

Do I didn't think it was working when I plugged it in for the first time
