Hmpk Koi [spawn Log] - Page 2

Aw nuts! Wish you were here in america, those are some beautiful babies!!
Here's a photo of the tank. It's kinda in a mess right now but I'll clean it and rescape it when the fry are big enough

Just noticed one of the fry has a swim bladder issue. I'll need to work on getting that fixed. Here's a photo of one of the fry

How do you keep the males from fighting? Or is that not a problem, because they are so young?

How will you have enough tanks, to hold all the baby bettas, in?

Cameron2585

It's not a problem yet because they are just 1 month old. I will have to temporarily jar them in a month or two depends on when they start to show aggression.

How will you have enough tanks, to hold all the baby bettas, in?
The females will all be kept in the 40gal they are currently in except for a few if they show aggression. The aggresisve females and all the males will have to be temporarily jarred in either a 2l bottle or mason jar and daily water changes need to be done for evey jar which is quite a challenge

Rtessy

You could probably set up a bunch of connected airline tubing into the jars with one control valve and drain them all at the same time, maybe refill the same way but raise a tub and let it drip back in

Cameron2585

Should I put the mother in the tank with them so many they start eating the dry ans frozen foods? If she doesn't seem to be too aggressive with them

Ok definitely not happening. I've kept her with guppy fry before but I tested her with 3 guppy fry right now and she demolished them in seconds

Guanchy

I would not put mom with fry, she will definitely go after them

AbraCadaver

Dang look at that amount of fry!
I got 40 my first spawn, have 15 or so left. Some are just refusing to grow for me. Lol. Still tiny little things. No color showing yet either.

How old are they? Mine started colouring up at 2 and a half weeks old

They’re 4 weeks old today. I have 3 that are relatively big, the rest are still pretty small. No color that I’ve noticed. Still brown and white

Cameron2585

Here's a video:

I still can't get them to eat flakes yet. 32 days old. There is one fry which has lost its stripes and has like an orange pale body with red fins. 3 or 4 have black fins but they don't show on camera with the black background. Some have dark purple bodies with pink and red fins aswell and some cellophane fry are blue. One cellophane fry which had red fins is also getting blue fins. And one cellophane fry with blue looks pink near his stomach area and it looks so cute but I can't get a photo of him

Thanks! Once one started colouring up all of them will start very soon, you might wake ip tomorrow and almost most of them will have some colour

That’s great to know! The one showing color is the biggest of the group. 2nd biggest is a brown with a stripe. I just love this journey and love following your journey! I plan to breed my HMPK koi next round

Awesome! I'd love to see a spawn log of your koi bettas.
One of the fry lost its stripes (dark fry with red fins in the photo and his body is actually purple but it doesn't show on camera)

Got 10 new guppies for the tank so many they can stary to eat dry foods. They are smaller and the males are the same size as the biggest fry. The female are a bit bigger but they aren't big enough to harm the bettas. Look at this cute betta! (and there's the photos of the guppies after)

Good news! Watch this video and you'll see the fry actually eat some flakes. They do spit out small pieces sometimes as you can see in the video. (look ay the cellophane fry on the right) and if you look carefully when the smaller fry comes up the bigger fry he actually flares at him!!

The new guppies/endlers I got, yeah after 5 mins of being in the tank we have fry already! So amazing

AbraCadaver

Oh I love it! I wonder why most of mine are refusing to grow, lol. I’ll see if I can’t get a side by side with largest to my smaller ones.
Once all these guys are bigger, and I move them again I’ll difinately do a HMPK spawn log. It was nearly impossible to find my male and I don’t have a female koi but I have a cute little white and red female I’m going to try. If no luck, I have a pretty blue and red Halfmoon female that I used for my current spawn. The red and white is a Crowntail, tho. Which female do you think?

I wouldn't use the crowntail, IMO crowntails aren't the best looking fish and that other female has that nice pattern on her fins, I'd suggest her (in consideration that I don't really know much about their form and body shapes etc)

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of crown tail either. They look... shredded. I like HM and double tail.
I’ve had great luck with my blue female so far. Can’t wait to see what her babies look like with her first spawn I’m raising now.
Only issue with breeding is, I have no choice but to buy from people who don’t really know the genetics of the Bettas... so I have no idea what traits they will pass on. Good news is... I can narrow that down with selective breeding offspring. Choose my favorite from 2 spawns of the same mom, different dads, and try to control it that way, from the way I understand it anyway. You can even breed brother/sister

I was meaning to ask, what are you planning to do with your baby Bettas when they grow? Are you selling them? Taking them to a LPS?
I’m unsure what I’m doing with mine, I only have about 15 so I figured I’d just keep most of this batch.

I have around 180 so I won't keep them all. I might keep around 20 and sell the rest I dony think my LFS will take them all so I will sell them to people

I have 3 baby Bettas a co worker gave me as she couldn't care for them. She got them at Petco.
How do you keep so many in a tank and them not fight? Mine bickered enough to where I had to take the bullied one out. The other two get along fine.
How old are these guys that Petco sells? Anyone know???

You can never be exact because they might not have been fed properly or taken care of properly but id say around 2 months or 3

They all seem to be eating dry foods now (crushed up flakes). I'll try give them frozen foods tomorrow and see if they eat them, it's so much better now that I don't have to rely primarily on BBS because that was such a pain but I still am giving them some BBS either with every feeding or once a day or whenever I feel like it but they will get dry foods with every feeding now because I don't want them to get used to eating live foods only again

Look at this dark baby! So cute
IMG_20190504_120746.jpg
IMG_20190504_120734.jpg
I also just saw another dark fry with like lighter patches on his body so I'm guessing he's about to change colour

That fry which had lost its stripes and had red fins that I posted photos of yesterday, he's the fry with the dark body and lighter patches now. Almost all the swim bladder issues are gone and if you watch video (the fry which I focused on is the fry with patches but I dimmed the light so it's kinda dark in the video)
you'll see that they start to get a tiny bit aggressive when I feed them

I couldn't get just 3 to play nice in a 75 gallon tank. Once I got 7 it was a much calmer tank. So I guess its the more the merrier.

I haven't actually tried a sorrority yet but I have heard from many people that their bettas kept getting aggressive when kept in pairs or groups of 3 but they were fine when they had 5 or more

david1978

I started with 3. It was super aggressive. With 5 it calmed down. With 7 it was a whole different tank. I'm up to 19 now and there is the occasional chase across the tank but nothing like having 3-5 of them. And I even have 3 males with them.

I actually prefer to get mine from places like petco (I go to pet smart) because they keep them in clear containers next to each other. So basically what happens is they get use to seeing all these other fish right next to them... I have a community of male and female. I’ve had the best luck with petsmart Bettas being friendly. When adding any new fish my dominate male will flare at it and chase it but he never “fights” other fish. It also helps to have tons of places for them to hide, and hang out so they’re not bugging one another. My Betta fish like to swim at the bottom in the plants a lot.

Right. In the town over we have this “thrift store” the local animal shelter opened, to help with food and medical treatment and such. I figured with ones I can’t sell or my LFS won’t take, I’ll donate some to that store to help them raise money for the shelter. Closest pet stores where I live are literally a state over... in Indiana. Closest in state would be near st.louis which is too far of a drive. The only private owned (not a chain) store I have around only takes male Bettas. But, she gets a lot of her fish from local breeders. She’s also the only place anywhere that sells brine eggs, that she orders specifically for her local breeders.

Cameron2585

Some are getting quite aggressive during feeding but they're still too small to jar them

I fed them some bloodworms and they ate all the pieces that they could fit in their mouth. I just cut them a bit. There were a few big ones that the fry tried to eat as you cab see in the photo

Tried some "frozen lobster eggs" and they ate them. I also fed them 2 cubes of bloodworms along with some flakes this morning and they ate them and I feed them BBS like once every other day but only small amounts

Same! I'm so excited and I hope we get some lovely kois. Feeding them one cube of those frozen lobster eggs isn't even enough for them anymore so I fed them a cube of that and a cube of bloodworms but I might need to add some more food. I'm feeding them twice a day now. Largest fry are at an inch in length but last week I didnt do a water change for a whole week so that must have slowed down their growth for sure.

I want to name the two largest fry, any name ideas?

I’d suggest some names but I haven’t even named mine
They’re gorgeous
Mine are finally showing some color, but only a few are “big”
Some just aren’t wanting to grow...
I think it’s because I can’t keep enough brine to feed them... properly... and I only have 17.
So I ordered some micro worms from eBay, lol.
I’m working on my HMPK male koi now... he’s kinda weird... building a nest, wrapping female... but he can’t get his wrap right!
And the poor female just swims around him flaring like, please get these eggs out
Oh!
I wanted to share a method with you for cleaning the waste from tanks... because Bettas poop a lot... lol.
And when they’re small, this really works and helps to not suck any up...
I use a air hose... as a siphon... it’s small, so I can get out a lot of waste in small places without disturbing anything... and to water change with smaller fry, just a small air stone to the end of siphon sucking water, use a clip to hang it at the spot you want the water to drain, and it’ll drain without sucking up fry

Thanks for tips! I've actually used the air tubing as a syphon when they were in the 10gal but I can't anymore as the tank has gravel. I doubt microworms have any nutritional value for your betta fry since they have gotten bigger (or are they for other fry?)

AbraCadaver

They’ll be for the other fry, and just a substitute for my current fry... sometimes my brine don’t have a great hatch rate in time... even though I keep 2 hatcheries. In case of emergency figured it would be good to have a backup

Cameron2585

Guys am I seeing correctly?? This fry looks like I can see its ovaries and an egg spot but they're only 46 days old so it's impossible for them to be mature already. The ovaries actually look like tiny eggs more than they do on camera. What are they?

I came to the conclusion that it’ll be easier to do micro worms in the beginning, instead of using all my brine. Brine is hard for me to come by unless I spend an unnecessary amount for it online. Only 1 local store carries eggs and it’s a state over from me. So, I’ll use micro worms at first for next batch then switch to brine and with this batch of fry, I’ll just use them when brine aren’t plentiful

Be careful not to overfeed with microworms because I've heard from people that their fry had missing ventral fins because of some bacteria in the worms or something idk but it could have been caused by microworms. I didn't do any research on that because I fed them BBS from day 4 up till around day 30 (started to introduce dry foods at around 20 days and started feeding frozen at around 35 when they started to accept flakes)

Mine are over 4 weeks and won’t even look at dry food, but like I said earlier most of them aren’t growing... it’s weird. Idk if it’s a genetic thing or what... that’s worth doing some research on though.
The girl I follow on YouTube (SimplyBetta) uses micro worms the first couple weeks. She actually uses like 4 different foods for different stages. Until I get my fish room upstairs all set up, I won’t be cultivating many cultures of live food lol. My children would have a hay day with it.
My son recently dumped coffee grounds in my 60 :/
Once that’s done ima buy a pair from simply Betta and breed them, and hopefully in a year or two have a few to enter in IBC competitions

How often are you doing water changes? And to introduce dry foods I fed them their normal food and normal routine but added a tiny tiny amount of crushed flakes with every feeding. It took them over a week and it was so frustrating just seeing them spit out the flakes all the time but now they'll eat anything that can fit in their mouth

It took them over a week and it was so frustrating just seeing them spit out the flakes all the time but now they'll eat anything that can fit in their mouth
I do a 50 once a week and I use the air tubing to do cleanup once a week, and replace the water. The tank they’re in is fully cycled as well.
I’ve been adding flakes but they don’t even look at them, I just add a small bit to test the waters. And the smaller ones have some swim bladder issues still, so when I feed brine I have to put the medicine dropper near the bottom so it’s easier for them to eat them.

I'm meant to do waterchanges 3 times a week and change about 25% but I never actually get around to doing all 3. Most of mine had swim bladder issues too but just try to feed a little less BBS and they'll all be fine after a few days

They’re getting better than they were, some are swimming and such. I’ve read that feeding brine shrimp at first causes swim bladder issues. So I suspected it. The bigger ones seem fine now thouse, one kinda swims upright with its tail dragging though

The tail dragging fry has Swim Bladder Disorder whilst the ones that float have Swim Bladder Disease

Watch these 3 short videos, these are just 3 of my favourite fry so far. (I namrd them)
